Default A mod for getting the type XXI early?

Is there something I can do to be able to start another career and use the type XXI from the beginning.

I know it is kinda cheating and really cheap but I really like the boat and I want to really put it through it's paces and not have only a couple of patrols before I have to scuttle it.

If anyone knows of a mod or some sort of configuration file alteration that I can try for my next career that would be great.

again...I know it is cheating and kinda wrong.

Kiwi 2005 posted a thread on how to do it once...

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=98740

I tried it myself. I was bored stiff by 1940. Unless you are real careless, you're virtually untouchable. Plus, you don't have much to look forward to in terms of better equipment.

It was discussed at least a month ago :hmm:
I can't remeber all the details, but in general, you need to edit 2 files I think. If you only work with 1, that will not be sufficient enough.

I think one file is about the type XXI parameters as a whole, and the other is about your flotilla and when they use what type of uboat.

Default the files.

I looked over the thread and it seems like it is VERY complicated.

If I was not so far along on my current career I would give it a go...but I am not sure how it would affect my save games so I will just save the instructions and try later.

have any of you had experience doing this modification?...how does it affect the rest of the game?

I use SH3 commander and the current version of GWX.

thanks

Mike

I used it after a clean re-install, so I can't say what effect it would have on saved games. Probably minimal if you limit the flotillas where the Type XXI would be available.

There also may be other ways of doing it. This was just the one I remembered.

The Type XXI kinda spoils you too. Hard to go back to crawling at a maximum of seven knots underwater when you've gotten used to sprinting about at seventeen. Oh...and after those marvelous hydraulic torpedo reloads....going back to painfully slow chains and blocks hurts.

You're right but then what's the challenge in that? You can still get a XXI boat for some single player mission like operation drumbeat and own everything with acoustic torps and your dual M-42 heavy flak gun, score really big but there'll be no thrill in that while you play it.

The thought of having that boat early-war, is tempting.
But I never tried...and why should I? I'm in my 3rd XXI-patrol in July'44, and I get immeadiat action once I leave the relatively safe Norwegian Fjords.
Sure, I have an awesome weapon under my command....but the battlefield is equally dangerous.

Take this one...just after I left the Bergen-fjord, I get 2 contact-reports: one friendly convoy, and one enemy taskforce. And they are heading towards each other, just off the coast.
I put our XXI in front of our convoy heading S, and play the forward-observer role for a while.
Our convoy is small, and escorted by 2 Flottenbegleiters...and then my watch calls 5 Brittisch DD's steaming up.
This is the moment we brake radio-silence, and send a contact-report - intended for BdU to send air-support, but also for the convoy behind me (something I just assume, roleplaying-wise).

What then happened, was just awesome: the warships started firing from long-range...and we submerged, and setup an attack-position E of the enemy.
We are one of the 1st XXI's coming into action, and on sea-trials...but still with a mix of trusted and advanced torpedoes at our disposal.
And before I know it, I'm in some very tence action...warships pounding the enemy, planes coming in from both sides, and we are in the middle - firing an acoustic everytime a DD comes our way.

In the end, our 2 brave Flottenbegleiter were sunk....but a certain XXI made sure no-one could tell.
Not without damage, though...we got some hull-damage, and a couple of wounded...but our convoy was alive and sailing!
So we send a patrol-report (which I pretend to be a RtB, and a request for escort for the convoy), and head back for Bergen, for the wounded crew and repairs.
Nope, it wasn't over yet...on our way to RtB, we got attacked by several aircrafts...but thx to our experienced flak-team, we busted a couple. Jawohl, Wir sind sehr zufrieden über die Kanone!!

Just pick the XXI when it gets available, imo.
You need a tough enemy, if you want to get the most out of this Uboat.
And if you're afraid your career won't be long anyway (war ends in May'45), then use SH3-Commander, to set the days-spend-in-base at 1.
This way, you can still have plenty of patrols if you are lucky.
And there's one great upgrade to look forward to: a schnorkel-mounted RWR!...comes in store in Jan'45 I think.
This time of the war is hard, but pure gamebalance-wise, it's great to fight the enemy with equally advanced weapons as they have, just for once lol.

Btw, this running patrol will have total radio-silence, and a stealth-test...not like the brutal force-display from earlier on...there was so much noise everywhere, that we didn't bother for any silent-running:

Your story is making me wish for a XXI (me? june '40) .. and I have still not equal against me, it's just that I could kill more...
Yeeees, I know with 11k my renown is still not suffieciwnt enough to even talk about excalibur :rotfl:

You can always load up UberBoot mod by Mush Martin

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=106453

you don't get XXI but you do have quote : Uberboot is a typeIXB Hull with a type VIIC/4 Flaktower on it. .. unquote ....

fully loaded at start of war with everything ! .. flack and deck gunners are pro's .... you still have to target your ships and give orders of course .... nice one is MAN THE FLACK GUNS ... then wait and watch as your crew rips them a new one ... almost makes you want to yell " IS that ALL YA got ! " ......

you will take damage and get killed too so don't run around like a loose cannon on a deck in a pitching sea

anyways . read the whole thread .....

I do that with my IXD2, no mods, no cheats, just some good men and a mighty heavy flak gun with four barrels and 2x twin barrelled flak guns (1943). I tell my gunners to wait for short range, that's when the planes dive for an attack and get owned While the boat is already at flank speed I time their approach and order the rudder full to a side so my boat is not longitudinally in the path of the planes when they drop their ammo.

The plate shield guard on the flak guns protects the gunners too and it has almost eliminated flak gunner casualties by machine-gun fire. The IXD2 itself is a metallic beast as compared to a fragile VIIC (for w/e reason). Sometimes when it gets hit by heavy gunfire or even some merchant's deck gun, i don't see any damage in any compartments. :hmm:

The slower aircraft usually get roasted before they can drop their bombs. Fun!

However the IXD2 is very detectable by active sonar when there are destroyers looking for you.

yes you can do it. all you need is sh3 money trainer and sh3 commander. first generate 1 milion renown, set commander for spending in base at 1 day and start carriere. Return at base same day and start to change equipment on your u boot or change manny times new u boot than back to old etc... While douing that you will notice that daysand months are changing. When you reach 1944th, simply transfer to flotila with XXI u boots and take it (dont remember witch flotila is it). When you do that DONT START NEW MISSION you will stuck in 1944, simply exit the game and go back in it with sh3 commander, because you set commander that you stays in port yust one day you are back in 1939 with brand new XXI with all aquipment but only with old torpedos. hawe nice hunt herr kaleun
