Default Manual solutions etc

Been playing both SH3 and SH4 for some time, and recently decided that i should try and learn the manual thing, because the point and shoot did start to seem to simple.
So i learned the hard way, but the satisfaction in sinking 2 tankers that were travelling alone with torpedoes only! (Second one tried to escape, went straight for me, and passed 10 meters on my side, so he reicived a stern torp in his rear). Was great!.

Anyway, the question that follows. Which methods are best to apply when you want to aim for certain parts?. Afaik the position keeper is the point that the torpedoes will run for, unless you set a spread. Locking the periscope and doing a theoretical 100% correct calculation would set that right in the middle of the ship. Ofcourse you could guess a spread then to hit the engine or any other good spot. I took some time to browse the manual in the matter, And it said:

"LOCK TARGET
Left-click on the Lock button in Periscope view to follow the selected target. You will
have the freedom to move the periscope to the left or right in order to centre the
periscope over any ship compartment."

Which i somehow fail to do!. I would personally prefer to try and aim for the engine room straight away, and not having to guess the spread which mostly ends with a worse hit.

So, any tips/knowledge would be much appreciated!

Default Noooooooooooo!

The best use found for the manual by dedicated SUBSIM researchers in nine months of extensive work has been to prop up the short leg of a table or chair. It was never meant to be actually read, and if read cannot be applied to any situation in the game.

Like a broken 78 rpm record (on Bakelite, no less!) I must direct you to the WernerSobe Advanced School for Submarine Attack Tactics (WASSAT) at http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=118923. If you feel like it, you can visit a renegade post by a bunch of former U-Boat rowdies, who discovered that Dick O'Kane also shared their madness and conducted a seminar on a method that individually aims each torpedo for different parts of the target and dispenses with a large part of US Navy official targeting doctrine. You can find it here http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...6&postcount=67. Just don't tell Admiral Lockwood about the last one. He'd get a little uptight.

Lock target I believe is referring to "auto mode" there is no 'lock target' for full manual.

Best way is to make a solution slightly ahead of the boats path, and wait untill the section of the ship you wish to strike passes the cross hairs and loose.

Dont forget to open the tube doors.

ps; Take time to read the links Robbins posted. Good advice and examples there.

Well, yes, you can lock the scope/TBT on the target in manual mod. What I do is send a torpedo spread using the TDC. The first torpedo has a 0 degree spread and the following torpedos I set at 2 degree spread. The will fan out and hit different parts of the ship.
