Hi Everyone.

I picked up this game a few weeks ago on a whim. I have always been fascinated by the period so I thought I would give it a try, even though I don't really play simulators like this very much. Now I have an addiction

Anyway, a couple of questions:

I managed to sneak into scapa flow, and I can't find anything worth sinking. I got in a couple of patrols ago (they assigned me the grid right next to it). Nothing was there except the normal destroyer/corvette patrols, and one V&W destroyer, which was moored out in the bay. I sank it, since I didn't want to leave totally empty handed. This time I get in, nothing there that I have found except for two of those damned v&w's. Am I looking in the wrong place? I was hoping for a cruiser or something, but I can't find one. Are they usually moored off to the east side where the destroyers are parked, or somewhere else? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And another thing, has anyone run into the following: I snuck into the firth of forth, and found a T3 tanker and a C2 cargo that were docked (as well as a couple of small and coastal merchants). I sank the c2 where it sat right out in the open, with a single well placed torpedo (not that hard since it wasn't moving). I checked my log to see the tonnage, and it was there. I saved and went out with some friends. The next day I logged on and, while I could still see the sunken ship icon on my map, I no longer was credited with the c2. Is there a reason this happens? I want to make sure I don't lose credit for something else in the future, especially something of a good size.

To add insult to injury, I hit a T3 tanker with three torpedoes while it sat near the C2, and nothing happened, no list, nothing. They hit and detonated, but apparently did no damage. Wasn't exactly a good day for U-52.

Thanks, and sorry for the semi-long post.

That's odd. It is April 21, 1940, and I can't find anything bigger than two destroyers. If I am reading that site correctly, there should be a CV and two auxiliary cruisers there. Maybe I am just stupid, but I can't seem to find them . They don't seem to be inshore near the city itself, and I am currently searching along the eastern side of the basin.

EDIT: I don't want to be lead by the hand to the targets, I just want to know if I did something wrong. Do they up and leave if you get detected on the way in?

Welcome aboard

I do know that some people have problems with SH when they save the game whilst out on a mission, usually when there is some 'action' nearby (many players recommend only saving in port or when no other ships are in sight), and it may be this which caused the error, since it would seem to be a problem with the sim's data rather than anything else if there is a sunken ship map icon.

Some players have never had this problem, others have played SH from day one and experienced it, I've only had it once or twice, but the experience of having a screwed up patrol, where my boat would sink five minutes after loading a saved game mid-mission, despite having taken no hits, was enough for me to never save in such circumstances ever again.

My guess is that the data is screwed and you might have to live with it. But you know you sunk it, so you can be a bit philosophical, not unlike George Peppard in The Blue Max, where they will not confirm his first kill and he is p*ssed off about it, saying; 'But I saw it, it was a kill!' whereupon he is told: 'Then you have the satisfaction of knowing that you have served your country.'

Unlucky on the other tanker not to get a kill with three fish, but not unknown in reality, with many seperate internal tanks (which can act like watertight compartments) and a lot of reserve buoyancy, if there is no fire, a tanker is a very resilient target.

No
The dates (in stock/vanilla) are definitely correct

Pick a date where there is something tasty listed for a duration of a month or so and try then.
Remember, going in on the precise/exact date may mean the scripting does not come into effect until 2300 hours for example :hmm:

I got to scapa as fast as I could. My patrol started on the 18th I believe. Maybe i'll just hang out for a couple of days and see if anything shows up. Its odd that there is nothing there and the website says there should be, that's all. And they should have been there for several weeks.

If your actually 'inside' Scapa it is highly unlikely that anything will spawn (game limitations).
Stay outside approx 50km away

According to the website posted above, isn't it supposed to be there already by the time I get there? I am within the window that it says it should be there.

I restarted the patrol and went in again....same two destroyers and nothing else :P.

Sorry for the confusion, I don't know what is going on. I want a warship to go with all the cargo ships I go after. And no, destroyers don't count

Have you got external camera enabled ?

If you have, use it to scout the entire bay

I did, nothing there. Is there anyway to speed up the external camera? It takes forever to go anywhere.

Also.....if you raise the view to it's max height, you will see further out, more quickly
