Calling all 8800 owners using XP sp2.

Hi shipmates.

I am trying to get the res fix working but to no avail, I have tried both the mscompat way and the resfix batch file, but no joy. danlisa has devoted much time trying to help, as you can see in this thread.
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=123295

However I'm still stumped

We both wonder if it is peculiar to 8800 cards. I have tried reinstall after reinstall, changed drivers, closed all uneccessary aps but still zilch. I really want this to work again because I know what a show I'm missing !

If you need any info re: the steps I have taken, you'll find them in the above thread. Many thanks.

Any and all help much appreciated.

Best regards.

Res fix?

If you are talking about the 1280x1024 custom dll thing to play the game in that resolution then yes it's working for me (using 8800 GTX here). I am using Microsoft ACT 5.0 under WINXP SP2 and SH3+GWX 1.03.

This is the webpage I used for guidance:

http://www.mysh3.info/shiii/index.ph...lay_Resolution

The older ACT 4.0 was not available at microsoft website so I used 5.0.

Make sure to put that custom dll file (Kegety's d3d9.dll) and it's .cfg and the new sh3.sdb (database file you create through the microsoft ACT) inside the game folder (E.g. C:\silenthunter3\). That's where I have those files. When you select sh3.exe while making the new database in the compatibility manager, it should automatically save those files there.

Hope that helps.

Update..........

Well I tried reinstalling SH3. ACT. and the resfix files. After having first deleted any evidence of the previous install inc. those from \my docs\ and patching to 1.4

Tried using my correct res of 1600X1200 and screenshot, result 1024x768.

Then tried altering the .cfg to it's default 1280x1024 and screenshot, result 1024x768.

FWIW I even tried making the .cfg read only in desperation, but to no avail.

Something is really screwy here, my last resort is a complete format and reinstall os and sp2 .

Any more suggestions are very welcome.

Best regards,

Fubar

I'm running it in 1280x1024 @ 60Hz since that's my 19" LCD screen's "standard" resolution (any less would make the graphics ugly and it can't do more than that).

Some things you might want to try:

- Try using a lower refresh rate.
- Try using the older 97.92 drivers. I think the newer ones were giving SH3 or another game some bad problem (can't remember).
- Use default global settings for the video drivers.
- Run dxsetup and make sure there are no extra-ordinary settings there.
- Use dxcleaner and/or a nvidia/ATI driver cleaning utility and remove them properly before a new, clean install.
- Also, instead of reinstalling the OS, use regedit, click "find" and then enter "silent" or "silent hunter" then proceed carefully to find and delete any registry entries and/or settings by silent hunter 3 (WARNING: Registry editing is risky business. Use at your own responsibility!!!).

Fenris,

OK I tried all that, still no go. In despereation I've reinstalled XP. Couple things to do to get it back up to speed, then I'll retry SH3. I do have one question tho shipmate. Which version of net framework are you using? On my old install I was using vs 3.0. I'm starting to wonder if this has some bearing on my problem.

Best regards.

Fubar.

You have an 8800?

I HATE YOU!!

I only have an 8600 GTS, but it's the next best thing, I guess.

I have three versions of .NET framework installed.

Microsoft .NET Framework (English) v1.0.3075 -- Size not listed
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 -- 35.11 MB
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 -- 88.36 MB

Also,

Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.0 -- 30.01 MB

I remember there was some utility (might be the dll) that required .net version 1.1 so I had to find it and got it installed as well as v2.0.

Hope that helps.

EDIT: I'm not using SLI. Only have a single 8800 GTX.

Hello, just saw this thread. Been running with the DX patch myself and have been running 1680x1050 no probs with a 8800GTS 640MB.

One thing I noticed in your config below... there should be a semicolon before the "enableScreenshots: Hook printscreen keypress..." like the lines before as that's a comment. If that killed your cfg parcing....:hmm:

; ResX: Horizontal resolution setting
; ResY: Vertical resolution setting
; useFiltering: Use linear filtering for UI elements
enableScreenshots: Hook printscreen keypress to save TGA screenshot
resX=1600
resY=1200
useFiltering=1
enableScreenshots=1
screenshotPath=C:\Documents and Settings\Mart\Desktop\temp

--------------

Also, for a shot in the dark you might just want to try running one vid card just to see if it works. If it does then might be some SLI and DX issue.

Thanks for the input Tonto.

Checked and added the semi colon, also tried no SLI. Alas I'm still stuck at low res. Screenshots all show as 1024x768. Wierd thing is in both d3d9.cfg and main.cfg no such res exists even when at default I've also tried synchronizing display in options. Still no difference. I'm totally stumped. FWIW I've tried the res fix at each different patch stage, then uninstalled and started afresh each stage with a new/fresh ACT fix.

I am now almost resigned to never getting back the glory I once had Seems I am now in your hands shipmates, more than ever.

Best regards.

If you have a friend living nearby who owns a compatible 3D video card capable enough to run SH3 it's time to pry it out of his machine and use it in yours just to make sure if it's really a problem with your 8800.

Well just some last thoughts (at least they are easy/harmless :P)

You could try installing the latest DX runtime update.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

November is really the latest but I've got Aug running as it came with Bioshock and SHIII works under that.

----

In Nvidia control panel 'Change Flat Panel Scaling' make sure your monitor make is correct and you have it set to 'use my displays built in scaling'

And your native res is set to 1600x1200 of course.

BTW I'm running NV 163.67 so your version should be ok.
