Default Added benefit of SH£ commander

I know there are similar threads, but, as these are for specific people, I need to ask the same sort of question as a newbie. I am currently running SH3 1.4 & GWX 1.03, what would be the benefits of adding SH3 commander and how easy is it to do so, and finally, any other 'must have' mods? any and all opinions will be taken on board (forgive the pun) and appreciated. Thanks in advance.

SH3 commander is going to add a career expansion for you that keeps up with the ships you sink including where you sink them. ie. SS John James grid square AN52.

SH3 Commander will also provide a back story for your commander including place and date of birth, and when you finish the campaign what he did after the war... assuming he survives or is captured.

You can award medals from within SH3 Commander instead of waiting for them to become available in the game.

Malfunctions and sabotage become available from within SH3 Commander which will randomly (if selected ON) cause a system on your sub to become malfunctioned. to include fuel leaks, poor mirror alignment resulting in bluriness in the periscope, engine trouble resulting in flank speed becoming unavailable, sabotage to (deck plates i assume) which make the crush depth much shallower, compressed air will drain to zero over time.

the malfunctions and sabotage happen randomly and sometimes dont happen at all.

one other cool feature is the randomization of enemy AI sonar depth to simulate variable thermal layers... every time you load the game, the maximum depth of enemy AI sonar is varied anywhere from like 30 to 300 meters creating a sort of thermal layer effect.

i highly recommend it.

other good mods are the open hatch mod, weather fix mod, and pretty much anything they have over in the mods forum is solid gold

Commander is very simple and easy to use, and adds so much that it's a good thing JScones posted his readme, because that's the only way you'll find out all it can do.

I've said more than once that I'm glad I don't have to choose, because Commander is the single most important tool for the game in my book. Whereas mods and supermods add immersion, Commander adds life. I just wish there was one for SH4.

There have been threads, but no news for awhile. I have high hopes, but I'm worried that it won't be the same.

We'll see (I hope).

Hopefully it'll be better. Potoroo has two years of SH3Cmdr development to draw upon as a guide to determine what works best and what doesn't. In hindsight, I'd certainly look at a few things differently, but two years ago I envisaged SH3Cmdr being used exclusively by a small group of RUb users on one installation (and it showed too ).

Having said that though, I haven't heard from him in a while, not since I sent him the SH3Cmdr randomisation code a month or more ago.
