I noticed a submarine docked in Dublin, Ireland today. It is S194 (U-15) but I would like to find more info if possible. Here's a link to a photo of it taken by a recent visitor to Dublin: http://www.flickr.com/photos/thebaz/...57602255105624
My simple web research says its call sign is: DRDI FGS U-15 SUBMARINE S-194 It was laid down by HDW in 1970, launched 15 June 1972 and commisioned 17 July 1974. Its home pert is apparently Eckernforde. Here are its specs: Type 206A coastal submarine Speed (Kts): 10 surfaced, 17 submerged. Range (Miles): 4500 at 5kts, surfaced. Displacement: Surface 450t., Submerged: 520 t Dimensions: Length 48.6m; Beam 4.6m; Draft 4.5m; Armament: 8 21 inch torpedo tubes (16 torpedoes & mines), 24 external mines Propulsion: 2 shafts,Diesel-electric, 2 diesels, 2,300 shp RadarSurface: Thomson-CSF Calypso II, I band. Sonar: Thomson Sintra DUUX 22 (passive), Atlas ElektroniK DBQS-21D (active). Countermeasures: ESM: Thompson-CSF DR2000U with a Thorn-EMI SARIE-2. Complement: 22 (4 officers) More info on this type can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_206_submarine Its WWII counter part sank 3 ships and was accidently rammed by a german torpedo boat in 1940, no survivors! Does anyone have any extra info to add ? Thanks... Last edited by Uber Gruber; 10-05-07 at 07:21 AM. |

There's a small grey warship tied up just behond her. I'm guessing that she is either on a tour before being decomissioned (budesmarine have started scrapping 206As) or she encountered a few problems and is getting repairs. Though i doubt she'd be tied up where she is if the latter was the case....so my conclusion is its promotive.

16 Torpedoes?
Not really. The 206s have 8 torps in the Tubes and thats it. Theoretically you could carry reloads when removing the bunks in the torpedo room, but thats hardly ever done. And even then I doubt 8 reloads could be carried. But 8 DM2A3s are enough to ruin anyone's day ![]() You wouldnt believe how similar the crew comfort is to "das Boot", the crews have to hot bunk, for example. But on the other hand, these small boats are very quiet and their crews are an elite. U 15 "sank" USS Enterprise during an exercise a few years ago.
