Default 'World peace' hitcher is murdered

An Italian woman artist who was hitch-hiking to the Middle East dressed as a bride to promote world peace has been found murdered in Turkey.

She had said she wanted to show that she could put her trust in the kindness of local people.

Looks like you should never trust anyone.

R.I.P. What a disgusting story.

Unbelievable. I remember as a student in the late 70's friends and me would hitch all round europe and beyond. These days I wouldn't dream of it.

Much as I would have spared her such a fate, there are terms for such people: 'naïf' and 'victim' are at the top of the list. It's like somebody going out to play with the cuddly lions.

I wonder if this qualifies for a Darwin Award?

Oh that's just ridiculous, really.

Is it? Pretty young woman, unescorted, hitch-hiking in one of the toughest places going (and incidentally, a part of the world where a woman's status is not particularly great), wearing a wedding dress, her only backup "oh, the people will be friendly."

You are calling me ridiculous? The crime was not hers and I am deeply sorry for her and those she leaves behind, but this plan was so incredibly Zoolander stupid, so unbelievably naive, that yes, I think a Darwin might be in the works.

Considering that she meant to promote WORLD peace and started in Italy, she didn't get very far then, eh?

Idealism cannot replace healthy reason. You may better want both. My sympathy is limited.

BTW, German and other secret serices now rank militant Islam in Turkey a far bigger threat than activities of the PKK. The Hesbollah is in Turkey these days. World still needs to take note of it.

The attitudes and responses appearing here are breathtaking, just breathtaking. So far people are only a hairs breadth away from openly saying 'she asked for it'.

What should we say about a grown woman doing something this stupid? Going in to Turkey dressed as a bride? Alone? Hitchiking? You havent heard how Western women are wiewed there? Im not a heartless person but even if a were her relative or friend, i would be angry at her.

Good god, well that about sums up the attitude of the world today, certainly as regards women. Other than hoping that one day fate reciprocates the circumstances in your own life, there is little more I can think of to say. You really have no sense of shame in actually coming out and saying something like that.

This is sick ****. So are some of the comments.

And let me say that imo this kind of sexual killing is much more uncommon in the middle east than in a western country. It is too much against islam / the culture. If she has done sth that is against islam, its of course a different story.

Maybe I am naive. But if she hard toured a western country, lets say Australia, the same could have happened to her, maybe even quicker.

Maybe she was just unlucky to meet this psycho:

She was raped and murdered in Gebze, an industrial town very close to Istanbul. The suspect, Murat Karatas is married with 2 kids. He confessed that he accepted Bacca to his truck in a gas station and when Bacca refused to have sex with him, he took her to the woods, raped her and then strangled her with his bare hands.

She did take a great risk, thats all.

But I am tired of being lectured by people with signatures like yours. In the end you will try to turn and twist everything to your agendas. In case you dont know, hitchhiking women can get raped and killed in any country.

All the women i know that have visited Turkey will never go again.
Reason? The sexual harassement by the local men is in its own level there.

3Jane I bet my treatment of women is better than that of the average Turk.

Of course it's much less common in the middle east, women aren't allowed out in that part of the world.
It is entirley part of the islamic culture to rape and murder a woman out without her owner, you only need to watch crimewatch to see that.
This 'artist' should have seen that, she wandered alone in an islamic country accepting lifts off strangers. I'm amazaed she got as far as she did.
And what has she proved? That you can trust people until you get into a muslim country? I think so.

She sounds like that lady that dressed up like a seal, so she could commune with seals... and she was attacked and killed by a Great White.

I'd say naive hippy women just don't get it. The trip would have been fun when she hit Afghanistan or western Pakistan.
