Default Anti-Grenade net

This is kind of a cool idea - http://technology.newscientist.com/a...ine-news_rss20

Anti-grenade net

Rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) are a serious threat to US military vehicles in many of the various war zones it is involved in. Some of the most advanced grenades also have shaped charges that can direct their blast to penetrate armour from up to 10 metres away.

So the US military research organisation DARPAhas funded the development of a new system that can effectively and reliably protect vehicles from RPGs.

The answer, DARPA says, is a system that detects incoming RPGs using a radar system, and then fires a metal net into the path of the grenade, catching and detonating it before it hits the vehicle. The net also has its own rocket propulsion so that it can intercept the grenade before it comes within range of the vehicle.'

I just wonder how much nets they could carry with them. I mean a metal net of sufficient size to intercept an incoming threat, made of several layers, with rockets attached, is surely going to take quite some space, even if stowed in a box.

P.S.: I think I'm never going to read a patent document again, espacially not the claims.

Or you could use the British electronic protection.

No they cant, cause it'd be 'un-american' to use foreign military products :rotfl:

Actually I suspect it would require significant redesign.

Anyway....the Russians used metal anti-grenade nets on tanks in WW2. Is this system
similar?

*edit* no, its nothing like that Letum....why don't you read the article first?

*edit2* Actually is is a bit like this, only the ww2 next are fixed. The new US
nets are propelled by rockets.
A little like the hydrolic space pens vs the pencil perhaps?

Or the Israeli system. The U.S. military wanted their own designed system.
