Default New pacific sub board game...released soon.

I don't know if anyone around here remembers when playing a wargame meant paper maps, die rolls and die-cut counters.. and how much fun it was to play them...if so.....this soon-to-be-released pacific war sub game may be of some interest.

Here's a link...http://www.compassgames.com/silent_war.htm

Kind of brings back memories of the hours I spent playing Avalon Hill's "Submarine"

Never played a proper sub board game, but i remember making a few of them myself, and never being able to persuade my friends of their merits.

I thought the day of the board game was long gone.

Gawd, now there are some memories.

Board games! ... Risk!

Non board games ... Dungeons and Dragons.

Lots of use of mental powers and imagination ... all taken away with the advent of computer games.

Silent War by compass games isn't a new game as such, it first came out in 2005 and the preorder is for the reprint due Jan 2008.
I brought it in march and can really recommend it. It's a very immersive and addictive combat 'simulation' of the entire submarine war, very historically accurate with some great details. Rules are simple to learn (ish) but the full campaign will take many many months of time to complete. Start off with the mini-campaigns posted on the website.
It accurately and neatly models the torpedo problems, radar, jap ASW, allied and jap submarines, sub tenders, war events you name it it's got it. Excelllent experience - only problem is I find it hard to find the time to play -you need somewhere to leave it set up for weeks on end undisturbed. I've preordered a second copy, ready for when my current one wears out. Theres an expansion pack, SPX, in development and a atlantic version 'steel wolves' due for late 2008.
Neal did a review on subsim's review page a while ago.

On man, a game you do not have to plug in to make it work!!! Imagine that, you do not have to go to best buy to pick up a $2000.00 computer system to run it!!! Just open the box and read the instuctions? How novel!! It looks really good. Reminds me of the days before TV pong when board games ruled the earth. Where Monopoly was played over several days long into the night because there was really not much else to do. Risk ended up in fist fights between my brothers and me. Nothing like the good old days. I getting this game for sure.

Diplomacy,
Now there is a game that shows you who your friends are (and are not). No dice to role just making deals and pacts with other players. Then finding out that they stabbed you in the back (admittedly just before you were going to do the same to them)!

No luck I'm afraid - Silent War is a single player game. Two players can play - one as the sub commander at pearl and the other the sub commander in australia, but it's designed as a solitaire experience. It requires some serious concentration and time investment and in my mind having 2 players would be difficult.

I think Neal reviewed this game sometime late last year. I remember proofreading the review for him.
