1.) Salvo Fire- I really miss this. One advantage is that it let you open torpedo tube doors simultaneously. My computer runs slowly, so opening/setting all the tubes/torpedoes is kind of a chore. I kind of wish I could just have a command to fire 2/4/6 in quick sucession.
2.) Upgrades- It feels like Ubisoft took a step backward here. U-boats got better batteries, engines, decoys, choices on conning towers, Medals that actually improved crew members, etc. I liked that I could have a 'modernized' Type VII through 1945. I also feel like the manual/game spelled out the roles of each type of submarine more clearly in SH3 than in SH4. |

1. American Boats did not have the option to fire salvos like the germans did. If you want to fire a salvo lock onto the ship, fire first torpedo at 0 gyro angle, wait six seconds set a new gyro angle on TDC fire again, wait another six seconds and repeat. and you'll get a spread shot.
2. I dont think american boats had the same choice in upgades.

American boats could certainly fire a salvo, it just happened differently.
It should be in the game, IMO... Skipper: We'll fire tubes 1, 2, and 4. I want a 2 degree spread. Final bearing and shoot. Mark. Crew: Firing tube 1... (8 seconds) firing tube 4... (8 seconds) firing tube 2. The TDC wasn't set up to fire a spread, the CREW set up the spread. They'd not fire at once since they worried about torpedoes setting each other off, so they'd spread them out in time 8-10 seconds. SH4 forces the skipper to do every little job, but as far as the captain was concerned, there might as well have been a "salvo" button. Reminds me of a line in Zulu. Bromhead offers to clean Chard's tunic so he'll look smart for the lads, and Chard says Bromhead needn't go to the trouble. Bromhead's line? "It's no trouble, old boy, I wasn't going to do it myself." ![]() tater |

1. Agree with tater. I wish there was an option for a COMPLETE firing solution, rather than having to press each button yourself. Kind of like a plan of attack that your crew would carry out for you. US boats didn't have a salvo button as it was feared (and probably rightly so, from a practical standpoint) that the runs of each torpedo being fired simultaneously could interfere with each other. Remember, you have to pump water into the trim tanks of the sub to make up for the weight of the torpedo you just fired (about 3000 lbs EACH) in order to remain at your ordered depth. Imagine 18,000 pounds of weight being expelled from the front end of your boat at once...you'd run the serious risk of broaching the surface. From a trim control standpoint, it makes perfect sense.
2. SHIV has the same idea and what the OP was asking for and carried out in a historical way in terms of technology, however the documentation of such leaves much to be desired. As one of the devs stated, it was something they wanted to implement, but time constraints limited them from doing so. Understandable, given the timeframe imposed on them from Ubi corporate.

Honestly?
The entire Atlantic theater. Why? In SH3, it was a serious challenge to survive the war. Germany did lose the war, for those of you who haven't figured it out yet ![]() Getting through the Pacific theater alive seems to amount to not doing anything really stupid, and not having pure dumb luck kick in. |

My apologies... that sounded a bit more... um... head stuck up my arse... than I originally intended. Didn't mean to disrespect all those souls lost.
I should've specified in game, not in real life. It's awful easy to sit through a DC run in front of my desk... in real life, I'd be the guy blubberin' in the corner, crying for his mother. |

In SH3 you really had to be agressive early to build up enough renown to have a submarine that could survive the later years of the war. In this game, upgrading up your submarine does make it better, but it seems less of a necessity. I'm looking forward to having uber radar with 2 5" deck guns, 2 twin 40mm AA guns, and reliable torpedoes. However, at that point, chances are the only good tonnage will be in harbor raids, since most of Japan's merchant marine was already sunk in 1945. ![]() |

The GWX team!
Seriously, I wish they had brought some of the attention to detail. Clickable things inside the submarine, standing at the map table and seeing the map, more interactive crew members. |

I think that Tater makes a valid point. As an overview though, you really can't compare the war in the Atlantic with the war in the Pacific. The dangers were the same in many ways, but the intensity of the Atlantic war makes Silent Hunter III a more dramatic game to experience.
