Default Sampans... do you...

...blow them out of the water, or not?

I'm quite new to this game, and have a dilemma. I shall be sent to an area to look for merchant shipping, spend hours dodging aircraft and sighting nary a vessel...

...except for those picturesque little sampans.

I want to shoot... I want to run them down and open fire just to get something, ANYthing on the logbooks. And they may be the only thing in the South China Sea more archaic than my own beloved pig boat. Still ...

They're utterly unarmed.
They aren't flying the Japanese flag.
They're frickin' SAILBOATS, for God's sake!

I just can't bring myself to turn my guns on them. Am I doing my country a disservice by letting them sail on by? Hey... some of them have good fish which Cookie buys off of them for a few packages of smokes! A nice tunny beats the hell outta whatever else he has in the galley after 30 days at sea.

So I'd like to know... will I ever get penalized for sinking them? Will I ever get penalized for NOT sinking them? Do my fellow skippers with more patrols under their belts turn a cold, appraising eye toward their fragile wooden hulls and blaze away? Or do you enjoy fresh fish for dinner as much as I do?

Regards,
Captain Tally

Clear your conscience, they're radioing back your position, let them have it!

I blow them up. It is good deck-gun practice and they are the enemy. They supply food and information and therefore are fair game.

They don't take a lot of cannon shells to sink. Send em to Davy Jones

Anyone else find it hilarious how a wooden sail-powered ship can explode in a Bruckheimer-esque fasion? What are those fishermen using for ballast...dynamite?! :hmm:

The bog problem is that they are junks, and fishing boats (I'm not sure any are actually sampans).

What the game lacks are a few very small japanese ships that were very much legitimate targets. Barges, luggers, the sea trucks, etc.

All the above are <1000 tons.

The threat of air attack in the SWPA resulted in the shipping tot he front becoming distributed instead of concentrated in larger carriers. So convoys of barges, luggers, sea trucks, etc sailing at night, camoflaged on the coast during the day.

The current "sampans" have to fill the role of native craft as well as japanese shipping.

Those fishie-marus are providing food and transport to the enemy. Furthermore, they are radioing my position to the fleet. They are legitimate targets of enemy shipping, and I have been ordered to carry out _unrestricted_ submarine warefare against Japan.

Besides, 20mm, 40mm, and 4.5" boom booms make me happy.

Well, this and all of the other responses are certainly clearing my conscience regarding blasting the little fellas, though I'll miss my fresh fish dinners.

Is that radioing back of positions something that is reflected in-game, or just a bit of color borrowed from the real war? Not that it seems to make much difference, my position seems criscrossed every few daylight minutes by a plane any time I am within 300 miles of a Jap airbase, anything that might increase my chances of being sunk are worth knowing about (and sinking first!)

Regards,
Capt. Tally

its not modeled in game, so what you do if you still want your food, get the food, and your cigarettes, then blow them out of the water

Default Hmmm

Usually I couldn't be bothered - sometimes it just brings an aircraft overhead.

But I try to use a .50 cal on them just to lighten that ammo load. What does everyone else use?
