Default Wreck of HMAS Sydney may have finally been located

Read this interesting article today in the Sydney Morning Herald relating to the possible discovery of the wreck of HMAS Sydney from World War Two: http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/...530627312.html

Perhaps one of the unsolved mysteries of Australian maritime history is about to be solved?

A brief history on HMAS Sydney can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMAS_Sydney_%281934%29

I was just about to post the same link. Interesting the low tech locating method! a grappling hook! I hope it is if nothing else that the families have some point of reference to identify with.

Default UPDATE: Royal Australian Navy to investigate

Minor update on this story with the RAN to conduct it's own investigation to either confirm of deny the discovery of HMAS Sydney off the west coast of Australia.

Ther is still some doubt to whever this is HMAS Sydney

http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/...857385542.html

I would like it to be her, as it would help solve where she is, but the actual reason why may never be known.

Yep, it appears that you are right. Article from the Australian today: http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au...-31477,00.html

False alarm.

I feel most sorrow for the relatives and family of the crew...once more their hopes were built up only to find that 'closure' was still not possible

Only a matter of time, given the leaps and bounds in underwater detection equipment....fingers crossed
