Help! How to save pilot

Okay. So he's popped red smoke and I could like spit on him from the bridge. How in the heck to I "save" him while I'm on acknowledged "life guard" duty? I'm at dead stop and this freakin' pilots just sitting there in the water!

Center your binoculars on him and press the liferaft icon in the Bridge menu.
