Default a most annoying problem

I have noticed that my L.I. has been having A LOT of problems keeping the boat's trim. Today I was stalking a convoy and he popped up to 9m when I ordered periscope depth, and he won't/cant change depth when I indicate on the depth meter what depth I want. The crew is green (2nd patrol), but I have an officer with the helmsman rating and a crewman in the control room with the same rating.

It sort of worked with the hotkey "d".

Is there something I should know before this kills me?

If you are planning on going slow ( < 2kn ) then set your depth several meters below periscope depth. perhaps 16 or 17m. This worked well for me.

Besides, if you are slowly rising above PD and order PD again they in fact try to reach periscope depth again but you won't recognise much of a difference because of your slow speed your positive bouyancy will be stronger.

If you order a greater depth in the first place (the 16 or 17m perhaps) then your boat will rise to ~14m. So order this depth when just diving and your speed is still high enough to press the boat deeper.
When you are already at 2kn or less you will be too slow to sink deeper and would have to speed up again first.

If you are using GWX which i assume you are... this is the effect of buoyancy being simulated. Real U-boats had the problem with constantly trimming to prevent the conning tower breach the surface thus giving away their position.

there are four possible solutions.

1. for periscope depth, order the boat to approximately 14 meters and make fine adjustments to depth using the shallow depth gauge. this will be particularly difficult in rough seas, use the P key only fir INITIAL periscope depth order and realize that the boat is going to run about 4 meters shallower than you acually order. (the margin of error is INCREASED the slower you go... so it will only run a meter or two shallower with speed of 2 knots or greater)

OR

2. use JSGME to enable the "reduced positive buoyancy mod" this will lower the effects of buoyancyin the game.

OR

3. Uninstall GWX and play stock (which i DO NOT recommend)

OR

4. Wait and see what the GWX crew might have done about the buoyancy issues in GWX 1.04
