Default Running Gun Battle...

I just sank my first & probably last S-class sub. It's October 1940 and I'm currently at sea in my second patrol with U-69. We came across the S-class very close to Lorient while we were on the way to AM 41. It was calm clear weather & I decided not to waste a torpedo but to try to kill the enemy sub with the deck gun. I think that was the longest gun battle that I've ever had. It took almost 20 minutes (real time). We stayed at long range & tried to stay at a 90 degree angle to the British so as not to give them a large target. I have to say that the S-class & her crew put up a real fight. The crew kept firing away at us while their sub darted & weaved. It was getting to the point where I was about to give up as I'd run through about 169 shells trying to score hull & waterline hits. Persistence paid off though as I scored one final hit & down she went.

This patrol is shaping up to be a good one as we've sank a Granville-type freighter & an Intermediate Tanker sailing together in BF 15. I must remember to set my torpedos to a very shallow depth when dealing with Granvilles. The last 2 that I encountered nearly escaped because my torpedos were set a bit too deep & just bounced harmlessly off their rounded bottoms.

I seam to always find S-Class subs.

I just sit on their 6 blind spot and shoot away with a finger on the crash-dive key.

When any enemy encountered, I will always engage! Never to retreat, unless it was a last resort, or too many casualties to the crew and U-15 itself. I have encountered 4 S Class submarines, and didn't hesitate to make a shot, I have went under water, I'll follow them until I get close enough, surface from behind and fire abroad..usually from the right side.

Sometimes firing at the propellers, it can destroy it and make the boat completely immobile, that's what I do when it becomes at escape-risk or if it's too much of a strong ship. Make it completely immobile, shoot or be patient until it sinks.

Are you using GWX? They were introduced in this mod. If you are using GWX, S class subs can be encountered singly or as part of a convoy. I've seen lots of them before in convoys (I should have stated this in the original post) but have always ignored them in favour of better/larger targets. This is the first lone S class that I've come across since installing GWX.

Welcome to the club btw...

Once in stock Sh3 I ntercepted a convoy with only one V&W escort, while I was surfaced.
The escort didn't see me, it wa foggy and a distand about 3km, I had no torps left and I decided to engage with the deck gun so I loader the AP rounds and gave it few shots, was destroyed before it could spot me.
Then I engaged the best targets of the convoy.

Default incredible incident

A few weeks ago I was on an early-war patrol in The Minch off the west coast of Scotland when I was spotted by an ASW trawler. Realising that it might be best if I legged it, I turned 180 deg. and showed him my tail while I increased to flank and hoped that my 2 to 2.5 knot advantage would be enough to open the distance.

Anyway, it developed into a more or less classic stern chase - us end-on-end and both giving it maximum revs and going all out. He was firing regularly and accurately with his 4" comedy gun but had yet to score a hit. Eventually he must have exhausted all his HE ammo because - and this is the great part - I began hearing these "poff, poff" noises overhead. It took me a minute or two to see the first one, but when I did it became apparent that he was lobbing AA shells at me which were exploding above our heads!

I didn't take any damage, thankfully, and when he'd exhausted this supply too I turned around and blatted the persistent wee turd with my 88mm. I've got pics of the flak going off if anyone's interested, they're not that great though.

edit: PS, I've sunk an S-class that was escorting a convoy. Took two torpedoes to do it. They're very manoeuvrable little buggers.

I just found one in a port called Blyth In 1939. Also found two reasonably good sized ships 1 whaleing ship 1 depot ship and 1 coastal coal ship.

Blyth was an important submarine base for North Sea operations during WWII.
