Can you tell me how to use correctly RADAR and SONAR ?
I don't understand how I must do to use it.

Sorry if the subject were already covered, I did not have the time of all to read.

I suppose it takes just as much time to read it here plus it saves us some time retyping it

It is sad not to have an answer more worked out a little.
I read all that I found and I still do not know how to make use of the sonar and the radar. Even when I have visual contacts, the radar and the sonar do not indicate anything to me…
I thank you despite everything.
I imagine that one can make the war without being useful itself of these artifices…

you need a more worked out answer, OK: Click the "Search" button on the upper bar. Then click "advanced search". Put in the key word "radar", then choose "search titles only". Then choose "Search in forums - SH3". do the same with "sonar". I am sure you will be satisfied
BTW, what do you mean by sonar? hydrophone (passive) or SONAR (active)?

SONAR of course.
Ping + no contact.
Ping + no contact...

And I get a ship right in front of me.

Thanks to search method.

If the ship is right behind you turn your sub one way or another. Active sonar is directional IIRC. I rarely use it however some use it for underwater targetting without periscope.

Try here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...ighlight=SONAR

the sonar can only be used when the ships type (merchant/warship) appears on the notepad you can see next to hydrophone wheel. that happens when the range to target is under 7500 m. however, the max sonar range is limited to approx. 4000 m, IIRC, depending on the type and year.

however, even if the contact is close enough to use the sonar (within 4 km), you cannot ping it as long as it is in your "deaf" zone - directly behind you, from 170 to 190 degrees or rather from 160 to 220 depending on the hydrophone type and year. there is also the early war GHG hydrophone that has two "deaf" zones - directly behind you and directly in front of you. but I dont think this is your case as it must be already 1942 or 1943...

You can ping targets with your scope and pressing estimate range button.

"Try here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...ighlight=SONAR"

be careful. there are two tutorials mentioned: one by greyrider and another one by me. both concern the PASSIVE sonar (hydrophone), not active sonar. but still, enjoy
