Default RUb Deck Gun

First of all, hi to anyone/everyone who reads this.

I bought SH3 when it first came out but I only actually got it working last week! After discovering that my soundcard had been causing problems in a different game I uninstalled it and switched to the onboard card - and wondered whether SH3 might finally work. Well obviously it did, and it rocks!

Heh, I love that emoticon. Anyway, I played through 10 patrols in "vanilla" SH3 as you guys call it, and then downloaded RUb. Several hours later I'm thinking RUb is great! Then I shot at something with my deck gun, and my crew managed about 1 shot every 5 minutes. According to the readme file this is "historically accurate" - bollocks! Common sense told me that a deck gun that fires that slow would be worthless IRL, so I did some digging and, sure enough, I found some info to back up my case. According to this site and this site, 15-18 shots per minute could be achieved with an experienced crew (which is about what you get in vanilla SH3). Admittedly my crew are not that experienced yet (I started a new campaign) but even taking this into account the difference in firing rate is still rediculous.

The thing is, a lot of people seem to love RUb, and yet my search through this forum for a topic discussing this deck gun anomaly was fruitless. You guys do use your deck guns, right?

Wait a sec... as I typed that, a bolt of lightning hit me... not unlike the ones that were nearly hitting my deck gun crew. RUb allowed me to man the deck gun in moderately rough weather and that's what I did... hmmm... well now that I've typed all this I'll post it, and then try firing in good weather and see if that makes any difference.

Aufedersein for now.

Trust me, you will find that it's been extensively discussed here, time and time again.

Here's one thread dedicated to RUb's deck gun... http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=80956

I'll leave the "heated" threads and posts for you to find, LOL!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! I think, having read all that stuff and more, that I'll leave the setting where it is. The fact that (in SH3) you can dive immediately has to be compensated for somehow and those statistics (only 5% of all U-boat targets sunk were sunk using the deck gun!) suggest that vanilla SH3's deck gun was way overpowered (I was getting more than 50% of my kills from it in the early stages of the war).

The deckgun has pretty much been "overpowered" in one way or another in just about every subsim.

It was thoroughly ridiculous in even the beloved Silent Hunter. You could easily sink the entire IJN before they even got the the range at which they opened up.:rotfl:

I would suggest consulting the relevent chapter on Conducting a Gunnery Raid in the Uboat Commanders Handbook.
