Default Very Experienced GWX player switching to SHIV

Hi guys!

Well, ol' Snakeeyes' new 'puta arrives on the 7th. I played GWX for a month and a half straight over the Summer and then my PC just died. I'm not rusty or anything but SHIV has been on my shelf until I could play it at max settings. In a few days I'll be able. The last time I had it installed I was trying out the FSAA patch.

I'm going to be searching these forums for answers a lot I'm sure and even be bugging you all for answers to questions you guys are all old dogs on.

I want to treat this as starting as a rookie again because let's face it, there's a lot to learn. What mods do you recommend I start with?

Any start up tips for an old hand learning all over again?

Trigger Maru is emerging as the crowd favorite. And of course, you can never go wrong with CaptainCox's work either.

I all seriousness.....play the game vanilla first and see what you like/hate. Head over to the mod forums and see if there is a fix for you. Personally I just use Oakgrooves submarine interior texture mod. I'm some what satisfied with game play at the moment.

Well, from my personal recent re-entry into SHIV 1.3 - I'd suggest you start with Trigger Maru as base (it's a solid package, certainly improves on vanilla game!) and then go from there and customize as neccesary. At least that's the route I've taken, and I'm thoroughly pleased with the results.

Mods I've installed on top of TM include Natural Sinking Mechanics, tater's Improved Campaign Files, Foo Fighters skins, and a few other graphics/texture mods.

Trying the stock 1.3 game first is a good idea. See what bugs you (no pun intended ) and then check for mods for that item.
That said, here's what I'm using at the moment:

Green button mod
Battle stations/silent running on all menus mod
Living Breathing Ocean mod
Natural Sinking Mod
Real Diesel sounds mod

And probably one or two others that I'm forgetting.

Good luck and good hunting! Enjoy that new rig!

Trigger Maru for me.

Big mod pack with most everything you need. I tweaked a couple settings to my liking and I'm off!

I also used a loading screen mod and the smaller plants & rocks mods for when I'm looking at the ocean floor.

Default Another plug for Trigger Maru

I agree that you should play it naked for awhile. That way when you load up Trigger Maru you'll feel like the first time you fired up GWX and looked around the harbor in wonder. By that time, Ducimus may have Living Breathing Ocean and a few other tricks incorporated into Trigger Maru 1.4.

You can ignore all the criticism of Trigger Maru's too difficult AI. Coming from GWX you'll truly wonder what all the fuss is about. The American sub is 1 knot faster at silent speed (that's double!) and maneuvers just about as good as a Type VII. SH4 has thermal layers wonderfully modeled, which adds to your advantage. Just be sure to read the proviso on thermal layers from Ducimus. A thermal layer is not a brick wall. It's more like a screen door.

You're going to love the Position Keeper in the American Boats. It's actually possible and many times desirable to shoot with the periscope down, completely preserving the accuracy of your shots! With the Position Keeper it is entirely possible to kinda sorta accurately shoot torpedoes from sonar data only. Last time I did it I got four hits out of five torpedoes.

The Pacific has all kinds of challengingly shallow water to tempt you to your death. The first thing you'll say about the Pacific is "I actually thought the Atlantic was big?"

Don't scrap SH3 by any means. I think it is close to equally as good, but you are going to love SH4!

Current version of Tmaru is 1.4, its 1.5 that's in the works. It will have alot of new things, and alot of adjustments. New contruction (set of scripted missions), Natural sinking mechanics mod, Taters latest campaign, etc etc.

Coming from GWX, id imagine you woudlnt have too much troubleTmaru 1.4 since you should already be familiar with how to evade DD's coming from the atlantic theater. That said, my cavet is that weather isnt a great a factor in escorts ability to detect you as it is in GWX.

I play both games, and won't uninstall SH3 for sure.

I love SHIV and plays it vanilla, for the moment. Just a couple of mods, to fix a small merchant CTD and to add an angle measuring tool centered on my sub on the navigation map.

But I'm aslo afraind of SHIV, with those few handy tools we didn't have on U-boats: the position keeper, the stadimeter distance measurement made easier, the default speed measurement that works great and even give you the ship course...
I'm afraidn of getting too much used to an "easier life"

So I play both, because SH3 with GWX is still a really great game too, and it will remains for long on my computer.

Tried that. I didn't play any better or worse, but did get cold eventually, which I would expect in the Atlantic but not in the Pacific. Is this mod-able?
