OK I understand that the GWX escorts are suposed to be better than the stock ones but I cant even track a convoy! I can only hold for about 5 minints before the DD's know im there. And thats at max sight distance!

What year are you playing - because for me the stock version 1.3 d`s is not a big problem

A lot depends on the weather...in poor weather 1940-41 I could easily get to with one km or so before a DD picked me up (that's running on the surface). Sometimes with heavy fog you might even get to within half a klick of an escort
![]() Calm weather...safer to track the convoy and wait for night.

Furthermore, if you are running fast on the surface and as a result you are leaving a big wake... you are much easier for them to spot... not to mention the maximum aspect ratio of your sub that you are showing the enemy when you are running parallel to them. Once they have you spotted... it is easier for them to know where to look... and to continue tracking YOU. All of these things are modded to that effect in GWX and have been for some time. All of this is covered in the GWX manual and on the sticky regarding GWX sensors here in this forum. Furthermore, in the gunnery section... you will see how warships had more powerful optics than U-boat crews. |

Yeah, I always track using the phones. If you know the convoy speed it's easy to work out where they'll be by just converting the knots to distance. Assuming they don't change course, but they usually don't unless they are at their turning point you see on convoy paths. I just pick a point they'll be at during the night and then race ahead , park it there and wait for them to come.
I kinda like guesstimating with the phones, the charts you end up with with all your lines, guesses and calculations can look so cool :p. But I'm also a total wimp on surface attacks after being spotted on some, I'll get closer on surface but always attack/sneak past submerged. T. |
