Default SH4 big improvement on SH3

I recently picked up a copy of SH4 and just completed my first war patrol.

I think the game is a huge improvement over SH3. In SH3 I could never manage to sink anything but lone ships for some reason, yet in my first SH4 patrol I sunk over 18,000 tons! (then I remembered I forgot to changet the realism settings, they were 5/100. completing the last half of the patrol submerged was fun!)

I really like the cutscenes between patrols, they keep you informed of whats going on during the war. Getting radio reports of events like the japs invading Borneo is also really nice. I don't remember anything like that in SH3.

The game also runs better on my system than SH3 which is a surprise. It looks way better too.

I'm running it stock 1.3 right now but I might try Trigger Maru at some point later. Right now it feels way more like the original Silent Hunter 1 (which I loved, superb game) than SH3.

Mmm now time to kill more japs.

Personally, I think the cat and mouse Drama of the Atlantic will always be a more atmospheric gaming experience for the player. I really like SH4 patched to 1.3 and modded to taste, but I really hope we get a Silent Hunter 5 set back in the Atlantic.

Those were nice touches. I liked the cut scenes as well. I just wish that the radio messages (for the most part) were influenced by actual in game events and not just color text.

SH4 is a very good game. So is SH3 I dont think anyone can definativly say one is 'better' than the other. One game does somethings better while the other does other things better. It really is a matter of personal taste.

SH4 is ok just patched to 1.3 but it becomes a whole new game when you get it modded up Try LBO, Taters campaign layers and Natural Sinking Mechanics just for starters they really make a real improvement. TM is good too (infact it includes versions of those other mods I mentioned), personnaly I don't use it all just a few selected bits I picked out. TM does include a cool environment mod that improves the sea colours, no more quicksilver ocean, thats hard to get otherwise the thread for it was removed. Theres an eagerly awaited new environment mod soon to be released by Leovampire and Kriller, the screen shots of it are brilliant take a look over on the SH4 mod forum. When I first went there think I spent about a week just downloading cool stuff for my game
