Default Getting inside a convoy techniques ?

Any tips for approach and getting into a convoy ?

At the moment I try to get between the 2 lead destroyers on the outer edges, facing BOW towards the incoming convoys, sitting stationary, silent mode.

I stay at PD until they appear on the periscope, once they arrive into view I then drop down deep and use the sonar to track the convoy into my hiding spot, one the main convoy arrives I pop back up to PD and start letting loose.

I have had mixed success with this technique so far, but im buggered if I can find another sollution that seems to work better.

I am running the TM mod fwiw.

Cheers for any advice in advance

I usually approach directly facing the outer columns of the convoy at PD, silent run (2knots tops). This puts me *just* outside the DD's active sonar rance (~1000m). Once I'm within ~6000 of the lead DD I dive deep (150-200m) and wait until the lead DD passes. If at any time he flanks for me it's a game of get the hell out of there. If not, my approach will put me on a collision course with the outermost column. I turn inward towards the covoy to line up shots at an ideal angle (as close to perpendicular as possible). Then I let loose my torp load (while making sure my course is steady -- wouldn't want to throw torpedoes off track) and afterwards I complete the turn, lining up the stern tubes for a shot at the outermost column. Note that this is quite difficult to pull off with Manual Targetting.

As long as you're not within less than 1500m of the DD at any time, you should be good. I might slow down to 1 knot while the DD is really close (under 2000m), but I'd never stop. I'm one of the guys that thinks stopping is bad.

The escape is the tricky part, but I usually go underneath the convoy to throw off the escorts. It WILL take a while.

I prefer to get in a range of about ~10000 meters and dive to about 175 feet. I can still observe the column movements via my sonar. Once I get to this depth, I wait until the column passes over me. REMEMBER: CUT YOUR ENGINES TO 2/3'RDS OR RISK BEING DETECTED. Once behind me, I go to periscope depth and do a hard to port (or a hard to whatever side by determining whichever side has the most devastating escorts). I take them out first, with my bow torpedoes (I normally use tubes 1-4 on my Salmon; you'll definitely want to get the shafts opened ahead of time). The merchants and transports are usually pretty weak, so it's best to use high explosive shells from the deck gun. However, I advise that you check for the defenses of the ship whilst at periscope depth. If necessary, use torpedoes to sink the merchants, but be ready to pay a lot of currency for the top of the line ones (which I prefer to use).

And if you don't like my technique, then I really don't give a damn. It works on full realism and I've sunk over 300,000 tons with it.

I normally will go from the flank side of the convoy, depending on which flank is closer to me when i make contact. It is time consuminig but i use the free camera on normal time to get in middle of convoy, but if destroyer gets near me i stop til i see where he is heading. ill slowly inch my way forward whenever the destroyer turns away from me, then when i get up to 3 knots i select stop and drift forward. Takes a lot of time but it works for me all the time.

Get out in front of the convoy and submerge as deep as possible, heading right for the convoy. Off to one side of the centerline is preferable, but still inside the outer most column of boats. Run silent at 1kt.

Wait until the lead escort has passed and you're seeing a spread angle of 60 degrees on the merchant vessels, then give a rise to periscope depth at 2kts, and turn your boat toward the convoy course track. Reduce to 1kt as you approach p-depth.

Fire bow and stern tubes as quickly as possible.

Dive at 3 or 4kts until you get as deep as you can go, then run at 2 kts out the back flank of the convoy.
