Default Hmmm, what went wrong?

Hey guys

Executed my first harbor raid last night in my iid. Under cover of night, fog, wind & rain I slipped into Southend completely undetected...

lying at anchor and moored up were a pretty tasty smogasboard of targets... having 3 fish to fire, I chose a section of the harbor that had a medium cruise liner and a small merchant. Both were moored to piers.

I put two electrics on impact into the liner. The 1st about 35ft abaft the bow... The 2nd about 35ft afore the stern. Both set for 5m and impacted about 3m above the keel so they looked god on the event camera.

The merchant got the last fish also on impact, aimed for directly on the beam except he was moored at approx 50 degrees aob (liner was at 90).

No event camera on the steamer but i heard the impact...

Anyway, i confirmed the hits on the liner via event camera but my attention were on sub nets & destroyers... I successfully escaped the harbor but neither boat sank.

Should i have gone with 3 in the liner? Would magnetic have been better?

Time frame was Jul-40

Thanks!

Well, how long did you waited after scoring a hits on those ships?
It takes a looooong time on GWX ship to sink, depending where you hit and how many hits you scored.

:hmm: Also whats the realism setting for ships sinking times?

And yes, you do have to hang around and make sure the ship sinks, especially in shallow water. Its better off destroying your targets outright in port to avoid difficulties and almost assure credit.

Of course you could always hang about waiting in 20m of water with DDs an Trawlers steaming all around in a feeding frenzy. ..and hope your target drowns fast...

Thanks for the replies...

By the time i escaped the harbor (i'm still within 25km of it) probably 2 hours in game had elapsed... Then i saved & went to bed. Could it be that i didn't get credit for the liner because he only had about 4-5 meters under his keel?

I have all realism on except for realistic ship sinking time, event camera, free view, and weps officer assistance (all he can do is help ID).

Running GWX2.0, OLC GUI, Torpedo Damage Final mods.

He may be sat on the bottom so the game doesnt class him as sunk if the water is shallow as you say

I fired 3 into a troop transport & wouldn't sink, even after 20 minutes, so I sent a fourth, that did the job, this also was in a harbor raid, bit of a waste of torpedo's but I could hardly surface and I wanted my credit!

The ship can be destroyed in either of two ways......via flooding, or by a total reduction of it's damage points.
In either case you don't get the renown until you receive the message "She's going down".

I feel like harbour kills are not really 'kills', because of the shallow water thing. Like, if you torp a battleship in harbour and it sinks 20m, it will likely be raised later and repaired, or at least used for parts/scrap, making it less than total destruction. I only feel really good about sinking a battleship (or any ship I guess) in really deep water - then I know that no one will ever bring her back to the surface. I think the harbour half/sinking thing sorta addresses this issue - you only get half the tonnage on average. As a side note, I was harbour raiding in the carribean - i think it was curacao (have to check the map). Anyway, the harbour there is insanely deep - like it's on a shelf. I did a raid and sent three tankers down into the abyss. I could just imagine them tumbling down the shelf into oblivion...
