I blew out the foam on one of my 12" subs yesterday. Not very happy about that. It is good to know that it is time to be replacing it however, since I was cranking about 1000 Watts through the system (I have 4 amplifiers). The foam on these guys needs replacing now and then and I am leary about giving my irreplaceable speakers to just anybody in the US (Teledyne is the manufacturer). Anyone know of anyone that knows what the heck they are doing in the PNW for re-foaming speakers?
I already found one place in Seattle that wanted to cut the cone out and re-do the entire speaker - no problem I say for the $150 they are asking, but quite frankley, nothing is wrong with anything on the speaker but the outter edges of the foam, so obviously they don't know what the hell they are doing if they want to chop into the the cone!!!!!@!!!! They are not touching these subs, that is for sure. So I need a good speaker repair place in case anyone has some good recomendations?? Quite frankly, I am down to 2x 12" subs and allthough the power of 4 is not there, it still sounds quite good - even though I even have one amp turned off! I'll survive until I find someone who knows what they are doing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, -S |

Sorry about OT:
So the name Subman is about speakers and not submarines. :hmm: Must sound pretty good with all of them pumping.

Hahah imagine that late at night. Although being depth charged would be an experience.

Found a place - $55 and they've been in business since 1946. Seems the place to have it done!

Dropped the thing off at about 1 PM today. Hopefully I get a good re-foam without messing up my driver. I have 4 of these that are matched to my cabinet, and I couldn't fathom replacing them. I guess if I'd have to replace them, I'd go after a paper/kevlar design.
Poly speakers are just about as bad/worst you can get so they are defininetly out. Paper has the most natural sound possible, but it warps, which is why kevlar would be injected to make it rigid. All and all though, I won't have to worry about it now. i am worried though. That speaker is practically irreplaceble in my book - i can't buy it anymore I don't think. ![]() ![]() ![]() -S |

Replacing 4 when only one is damaged would certainly cause me some pain.

![]() Those B & W 801's are somewhat attractive to me as an alternative. They have a 15" driver on the front, but I prefer drivers on the sides if at all possible, so I sort of fault this design. With a driver on the front, you create wavelengths in your room that hit in some places and miss others. This creates sweet spots since a low frequency wave is very long. If the driver fires from the side, and you have many drivers (4 in this case), then you create a much more even and smoothed out sound. However, I cannot fault the B & W Nautilus design which is based on the inner ear cochlea. Last time I was in Definitive Audio, a guy pulled up in his Enzo Ferrari and bought 6 of them. Someday, maybe I'll break for simply two of them! ![]() B & W Nautilus: ![]() |

A very odd looking speaker. It looks like a piece of art.

I can tell you this from experience.
As long as the voice coil is in good shape... you can use Duct-Tape. Duct-Tape ...I know I know .... Hey! it got me through many a show until I could save the money up to have the speaker rebuilt. But it looks like your not pushing near the Watts we did. But it's worth a try if moneys tight. I did try air filter foam one time and that worked quit well but it's no where near as tough as Duct-Tape. ![]() Wow. That brought back a few memories. ![]() |
