Default FFG and AI helicopter behaviour

Just a few quick questions about the AI behaviour of the choppers when there set to "link-helo".

They seem to just drift off to some position and hover there unless directed to attack a certain target.

Do they ever use their dipping sonar or toss bouys or prosecute a contact on their own ? Ive never had enough patience with them and usually end up micromanaging them.

Also if you have them under ship control how do you get them to use there dipping sonar ?

In stock DW they don't use dipping sonar. You need LWAMI mod for that. And to do that you simply order helo to move somewhere, it will dip when it gets there.

Even stock helos use buoys and they attack whatever enemy sub appears on the link or if the helos themselves detect some.

Anyway micromanagement gives much better results.

I saw that mod but it mentions something about interfering with manual control.

I was playing the 'tunnel' scenario and for fun launched two SH60's and left them to their own devices.

Lucky for me the towed array picked up the mini sub but the helos just sat there off to port about a mile off. Just sat there hovering.

There is no interference I know of. LWAMI simply rocks .. it's a must have mod.

I fully agree: it's a must-have mod.

But the user must read the changes at least once. It's important to know, for example, that the 65 CM torp of russian subs is turned into a wake-homing torp, and is no more an all-purpose torp with active/passive capabilities. It's note wire-guided anymore.

It's worth noting that the 53cm is modelled after the modern Russian UGST 53cm multipurpose wireguided torpedo... roughly equivalent to the ADCAP.

So the Russians actually make off with much better weapons in LWAMI, or at least much more accurate weapons (even the APR-3 Stallion combo that some of you had such ire over has some documentation now, I must be a naval tech clairvoyant :p )... including changes to the subrocs, etc.

Cheers,
David

The heloes "automatic behaviour" is set by the mission designer, i believe.
