Default Run Loud, Run Shallow

So I finally saw "Run Silent, Run Deep" this weekend. Is it just me, or is the title a complete irony? It seems like they do the opposite throughout the entire movie.

I will give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that the attack sequences, which look like they are taking place during the day, are night attacks. Even so, I've never been able to get within 2000 feet of a convoy on the surface without being sighted and ruining my torpedo solution. Attacking with a deck gun on the surface is one thing, you can just outrun them. My question is, why NOT drop to periscope depth, is there a real advantage to remaining surfaced if you're going to use a torpedo anyway?

Has anyone actually tried the game of chicken with a destroyer? In theory it could work, giving you a bow shot without the TDC inputs. In practice I bet you're toast. The destroyer would almost certainly bracket fire on you by the time you got to 1500 feet (which is when they dived). And even if you had decks awash and could dive quickly, it's not like 20ft of water is going to suddenly stop those shells raining down on you.

I tried some funky stunts liek that. Usually just got me killed. Playing chicken with a DD will cause him to come up behind you snaking and firing more that just the fore mounted guns. You can anticipate his snaking to get a torp in, but it's not going to be a lot more than guesswork.

Read the book.

While RSRD is the best Hollywood movie on US Subs in the Pacific, they ignored the book and did a Hollywood shoot-em-up.

Ned Beech (the book's author) was not happy with the film and came away under the impression that all they wanted was the title of his best seller, and that they had no intention of doing an accurate drama based on his excellent book.

Did I mention you should read the book?

JCC

ps The book is much better. You should read it.

Oh and another thing, DDs in SH4 seem to be immune to bow shots.

I have not found this to be the case ... fully 80 percent of my kills in DDs were bow on as they were bearing down on me for a DC run.

I say that because the last time I've tried it, I hit a DD with 3 fish (Mk.14s) in the bow and they didn't even slow it down. So maybe they didn't hit flush enough but all three detonated on target with contact fuses. Normally ones enough.

Definately the case as far as i've seen... I've put 4 torpedoes DEAD on down the throat in DDs on multiple occasions and they just keep on steaming like nothin happened.

They work for me as well, otherwise I'd be dead. But you need to ensure the torpedo can do its 400 yrds minimum distance to arm itself (so, firing distance is 550yrds or more, as the DD will catch with you). And don't fire from too far or else the DD can evade the shot.

For when you're using automated firing and the DD is zig-zagging, ensure you fire when the DD is coming right at you, or else the TDC will input a false solution as it gets continuously updated.

What's it about? Are there any submarines in it?

It's the touching story of a young girl, her pony and their quest for fulfillment.

And it has submarines.

Hopefully in these times of Hollywood remakes, someone may decide to remake it more to the book........but I doubt it
