Default AoB: Aspect Ratio VS Charting + maths.

Which is the best? Can one use the AR is SH3? Seems alot faster... problem with the charting is you need to take a while. And its complicated! 3:15 second gap between mesures of distance/bearing, needing to be exact, dawing several lines in the tatical map and finally connecting the points? Oh, this only gives you the course of the target! Then more maths to make it into AoB. This is EXTREMELY difficult to do all accurately! I tried it and if i managed to get the solution to go in the general direction of what intended i was lucky. Please someone, a less complicated method for AoB. Range is pretty much straight forward. Speed is also tricky and this should require charting, but AoB is the worst! I'm getting crazy!

Maybe this will help, but you have to the map contacts turned on. Not much in the way of lines and chart scribbles.
Doesnt include speed, though I guess with a little algebra you could figure out with the distance vs time equation. spd=dist/time

edit: there is a physics equation that you can do to determine AOB, but it's at home, and its been a few years since I've used any physics. Although, if you have the manual to Silent Hunter 1, there are a couple of equations you can use. Maybe there is an online manual of SH1 'round these here parts.

I couldnt find the manual online, but I have it at home buried underneath a pile of other books and papers. I cant remember where my physics notebooks are and I dont think I even have them anymore.
But for certain, there are equations at the end of the SH1 manual.

edit, whups, sorry for the double post.

The maths are not too complicated. Bearing from the north - actual course +/- 180º. The thing is finding the bearing from north requires: course. finding course requires plotting. Its too bad they shipped the game without the complete tools and easiness to use to enable a simple mortal to fire successfully. For instance, have you tried completing the torpedo academy mission in 100% under GWX? Almost impossible unless you persue every ship (but the tanker and the stopped one, those are pretty easy AoB = 90..) It's fairly easy to deliver shots if you have time to plot and replot. It's nearly impossible to plot, find range, calculate, browse the book so you find the target... PLus, to have accurate speed you need to mark the map on a 3.15m basis, wich is almost enough time for every ship in that mission to get out of range. I admire those of you who go 100%, i think i'm turning god's eye on. Sorry

You forgot one really good method of determining the AoB: the Whiz Wheel.

Does it not need the course? I wish i could do with one range and bearing but thats impossible...

Yes the AR can be used in SH3, only it is a bit more difficult because the scope marks are not well placed.

As for calculating it, real life is keeping me too busy lately, but I hope to have soon ready a wiz wheel specifically created for calculating the AOB based on the aspect ratio method. I'm currently using a crude version of it, and I can calculate AOB with just one observation in roughly 5-10 seconds It is the perfect complement to the MK3 sub attack course finder or to the german KM wiz-wheel and it will come in two versions also, KM and Silent Service...when I have time to finish it!

Soon
