Default Yep the Internet is full of surprises!

Was on a local trading forum here in New Zealand asking for help about banking, anyway this bloke comes on who we all know is an american cause hes probably the only one outside of NZ who trades on this site, i actually thought he was an american living in NZ but i found out today he lives in the states and just trades of the site. Anyway didn't know him from a bar of soap but seen his trading name around the forums from time to time. He offers me advice and practically answers all my questions i thanked him for the help then thought i did go check out his profile and blow me down I find out hes an ex submariner!!! Served on a Nuclear Balistic Missle Submarine. He is now on my friends list in the trading site i better make sure i dont bore him to death with the questions tho!:rotfl:

I threw some questions at him and this was his reply:

Hello Frank, I served aboard The USS Lewis and Clark a 640 class Nuclear Balistic Missle Submarine, My duties were the ships office, I work directtly with the Captain and Xo, I also was pilot of the sub as part of my at sea duties, Helsman, Fairwaterplanes, these are two different stations, both are working at the same time like two pilots in an Airplane , exsept in an Air plane you only need one of the pilots working at any given time. But in the Sub you both are working together at the same time.
I achieved the Rank of Pn3 (SS), my duties were that of a PN2 and 1, I which I could have had thier pay,

Our ship also had the dutie of testing all the top secret Submarine gadgets before they were released to the fleet
take care
Brian

I told him about Subsim and mention SH3 & 4 and Dangerous Waters yet dont think hes a gamer but did mention if he ever checks out subsim to try generals where all the non gaming discussions are.

It totally made my day!

You coulda knocked me down with a feather a few weeks back, serving up breakfast as normal when I encounter a couple from the Isle of Wight, my co-worker, Jean, was chatting with the wife when I suddenly spotted a "Submariners Association" badge on the gents coat, I was totally gobsmacked and just had to shake the guys hand and tell him it was an honour to meet him.

The gentleman you met was the ships personalman ... He worked with the Captain on correspondence, he worked with the COB for the plan of the day, he reviewed all of the records, he kept everything up to date for the some 130 officers and men of a fleet ballistic missile submarine. He still had to qualify and learn everything, but
personalman aren't required to stand regular watches like the rest of us, because they had a regular work scedule.

The supplyman and the corpsman were the other two that didn't have to stand watches, but sometimes the corspman would stand a sonar watch for fun. That was 35 years ago though and now subs have supply officers and medical officers, but they still have enlisted men for the office.

The USS Ethan Allen SSBN 608 had a first class personalman with a chest full of medals. So after change of command with all of us in our dress whites, we asked him, "Hey, where did you get all of those medals"?

He was a river rat on parol boats in Vietnam (a real hero even) and after his tour of duty they told him he could have any job he wanted. He volunteered for submarine duty, because just like the rest of us he fell in love with the idea from some old WWII movie.
