Try and sneak into the middle of the convoy.. at least past the destroyer screen is one.
Another is waiting for the destroyer to start heading straight and fire a torp, they normally die with one shot. That of corse pisses the others off and they start pinging... |

Open all doors and fire all tubes in a 5 degree spread.
Then surface and head straight for them at flank speed with deck gun blazing. Works very well with the current AI ![]() |

This is what I do
This is what I do
1) identify the course of the convoy 2) plot it on the map 3) do an end around and position yourself right on where the middle of the convoy will be 4) submerge to periscope depth 5) wait for the convoy to get closer and replot their course to confirm they are coming right at you 6) submerge to 200 ft or lower and go to silent running so the destroyers will not detect you 7) call battlestations and assign people to the damage crew 8) when the lead destroyer has passed you, go back to periscope depth. 9) lock on target and empty your front and rear tubes (use two torps per merchant) 10) dive and move away at 1/3 speed. The destroyers may detect your torpedo wake and track you down. 11) once you're out of harms way, turn battle stations and silent running off, get the crew to reload the torpedo tubes (which they will not do when in Silent Running mode) and start again with step 1 Even if your torpedoes do not sink all targets, they will definetly be crippled. Repeat these steps until the convoy is obliterated. Alternatively, wait for stormy weather or night. You seem to have more chance of remaining undetected while being surfaced. That means you have greater mobility. ![]()

Pepsican is giving sound advice.
I find the center lead destroyer usually cannot detect your sub if you are stopped or going 1/3 silent running especially below a thermal layer. It's somewhat debatable as to how many torpedos per merchantman as they seem to absorb an unpredictable amount of damage from convoy to convoy. It's also a huge dissapointment to put 2 torpedos into a ship and later discover it manages to limp away at 2 knots keeping up with the convoy who all slow down to 2 knots ??? Some of the larger tankers will stay afloat after 3 torpedos and proceed at 3-5 knots well down in the water with sometimes heavy lists .... amazing stuff. Depends on the time of day, weather, visibility, number of escorts, depth of water, how many torpedos you have. If it's getting near dark I try putting 1 each into as many ships as possible hoping they will come to a standstill or limp away at slow speed, surface after the escorts have gone, finish the immobiles & stragglers with deck gun, reload torpedos then chase down the remaining convoy doing an end round and repeating the procedure of submerging in front of anticipated path of centre of convoy. |
