Default Sub behavior in heavy seas....

Hello!

Be I wrong or in SH3 the Subs follow more the heavy seas (ride the waves) ???

The SH4 Subs seemed very static to me, I mean (not native english) the sub cut trough the heavy seas with 2/3 "fly in the air" instead of pitch up and down....

???

Yes, the subs often behave quite strange in rough seas. I've seen my Porpoise-class sub literally jump out of the water (even posted a screenshot). Just another quirk of SH4.

I think in general the subs ride too high in the water. The freeboard should be about three feet lower. I've tried to fix it using the old running decks awash trick from SH3 but It doesn't want to work.

Noticed this also.
It's as though the sub is on a constant plane only rocking slightly from a middle pivot point with no ability to rise or fall with the ocean. This was probably the case in SH3 as well but I must say that I didn't notice it in SH3 whereas in SH4 it's very noticeable to me.
Need to at least increase the sensitivity to wave effects.

Seems to be the same engine for this game as SH3. Same deal, subs cut through the water and not ride it. GWX handled that in SH3 so perhaps someone will do the same for SH4.

well according to the Das Boot movie:p the Uboats shot up then came crashing down in rough weather, in a real situation some uboat watch crew were found to be drown or missing when the next watch went up on deck.

I was hoping SHIV would have this heavy seas effects on the US boats.

Gonna add my voice to this one as well. SH3 wasn't perfect, but it seems more pronounced in SH4, possibly because the boats are bigger or something. As stated, some boats also ride way too high out of the water. One of my boats was nearly completely out at one point and you saw the screws above the water more than below it.

It's relatively minor, but it's also an immersion thing. So I hope to see some improvements in the wave action to the boat.

BTW, anybody run in to any crazy weather like the Monsoons that were talked about? Or was this just more BS from the pre-release hype machine?

Speaking of risky business, I didn't get to play the game enough to evaluate the weather but I'm told your deck watch may take casualties in monsoons.

If you look at the sim.cfg file, you'll notice the waves settings are appreciably lower then even stock SH3. Ordinarly id have ramped this up already but im inclined to think they lower wave settings were for a reason.

On a side note, i was happy see the watchcrew has their raingear on when it rains

Sometimes the sub can almost be floating completely out of the water. The waves just vanish beneath it. The sub seems to always go in a straight line, no tilting up and down with the waves at all.

It's not unusual for the props to be exposed in heavy seas, but I agree about the lack of wave riding. What I think is happening is the underlying stability code is too aggressive, OR not tied to the wave transitions aggressively enough. Most notable is the lack of down pitch in a trough. At best the sub never passes nose horizontal. I would like to see more bow down pitch in troughs.
