Default Trigger Maru or RFB?

Okay, just a little poll here in a way I guess..................

I have been going through all the mods for SH4 and trying to decide what to add and in doing so it seems it would be easiest just to add either Trigger maru or RFB.

The question I have is what one should I use?

I am not ready to play at 100% realism yet, but would like to be able to have alot of the realism both mods offer but not have the sim then too challenging for me................

Currently I play at 52 on the reality meter.........auto targeting and non-real sensors.............

I loaded up Trigger Maru for a bit and found myself getting pummled by destroyers and most of my torps missing.....................even with auto targeting!!!!

Any suggestions?

Default Trigger Maru

Well I have found that TMaru makes the vanilla version much more playable. You have to be extremely aware of the destroyers because if they find or get a whif of you - that is what they will do, destroy you. I also use auto targeting (there, I have publically confessed) but have only found that my missed shots increase only if I shoot from too far off, the closer I am to target the higher the percentage - which would be realistic.

both have a lot of great mods included in them. I cherry pick the ones I want and use the JSGME freeware program to install them. The mod readmes include lists of the files changed.

I confess I use Trigger Maru with auto targeting. I find the game challenging enough trying to avoid those Destroyers. They do just that destroy you if you are not careful. As a side note I hope Ducimus will continue with his excellent mod.

Default RFB

Hello all,

First time posting here!! I would like to recommend RFB since it's really trys hard to drive you close to realism and as a WWII history buff, I love it.

Real Fleet Boat is one of the best mods for any game, ever (even though I disagree with some of the Beery's decisions).

Trigger Maru is OK as well, but I for one don't like enhanced destoyer sensors and AI. The truth of the matter is IJN ASW was very poor, and destroyers in ASW escort role were relatively rare up to mid 44. In IJN doctrine destroyers were meant to fight and die honorably, not spend the war doing lowly convoy escort service.

There are other ways to make the game challening and realistic, but upping the DD AI and sensors IMO should not be one of them (god knows how RFB, especially with ultra weak deck guns and super-buggy torpedos in the last release can be *frustrating*)

My advice - try RFB but since you're torpedo n00b leave torpedo targetting on automatic.

RFB seems great......loaded it last night.........but in truth I do not think I am ready to go to it as of yet...........the nav map changes and all that were very real like but confuzled an old adled fool like me............

I really liked Trigger Maru also except for the pumped up escort AI and sensors.................not ready for that yet!!!

So I guess for now my only option is to pick through all the mods and one off em to get everything Trigger has EXCEPT for the AI..........

Appreciate all the input!!

I have tried both - and let me say - to both modders - great work! Trigger Maru is designed to make the game more playable - RFB is made to make the game more historically accurate. Each has their upsides. I have enjoyed both, and thank the modders for the effort.

I do usually play using RFB - but have included Kakemans improved escorts as well - it is for me the best of both worlds. The escorts in stock RFB still seemed to be asleep at their posts.

The question is really what type of game do you want. Both deliver unique and enjoyable gameplay - which one you will want will depend on your style.

Default Newbie Skipper

Skippers,
I thank Patch for this post. I was a wonderin the samethin. ( please for give my droppin my Gs) RFB or Trigger Maru? I think I may go with RFB.

I just finished makin a plot board, Submarine Attack Course Finder, even made my own Slide Rule. That slide rule will take me time to master. I have a used one order. Heck did not realize the math envolved of settin up a torpedy shot. It is an art and science onto itself. Should have listened and learned will my dear Ole Pa was tryin ta teach this dummy it's use. Mybe this ole Devildog can learn a new trick or two.

What this Ole Devildog wants ta do is tangle with escorts and master the down the throat shot and look and spit the devil in the eye so ta speak.

You are correct OlegM, the IJN didn't have good ASW until late in the war and that's why the US racked up on kills. That's what makes RFB good. Now I am heading to the front and taking on the thorn in the side of the Allies, Rabaul in early 43.
