He said SH, not SS; Silent Hunter, not Silent Service.
SS can also means Silly Smart guy.:p :p The best bet is to get the best DOS emulator, here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/dosbox/

I can play SH3 on my Pentium 4 with Windows XP, but I have to play SH2 and SH1 on the old Model T ------ 486DX/100 desktop with Windows 3.11 and DOS 6.22

It can be done, with some difficulty.
I have some instructions I can send, if you want them. EDIT:These include the full use of sound, joystick, etc. Following these instructions was the only way I was ever able to make the game run. Here is a link with some resources for running old games. http://vogons.zetafleet.com/index.php |

I've followed the instructions given for DOSBOX and it doesn't work for me. It keeps prompting for the CD. And yes, I did a full install, and yes, I've tried the listed combos of the BUD= possibilities. Do you have to delete those intro files for the DOSDOX method? I renamed them but that didn't do any good either.
I tried the method of a full install, setting it to run with win95 compatibility, renaming the .smk files listed and that didn't work. Do I have to actually delete those files?? Also during the install, in the system compatibility screen it did say I failed for one of the memory checks. XMS I believe. I have that set to auto in the compatibility mode screen. I'm at a loss. It's not a big deal, as I do have a 98 box, but I'm just tinkering around trying to get it to work. Thanks.

The original SH won't work when I try it with DOSBOX on XP, neither will AOTD. Must admit, I didn't give it an absolutely exhaustive try, but I did try quite a few things to get it to work.
Oddly enough I do still have a working Amiga, so I could play Silent Service, but I guess that the laziness of having to set it all up beats the nostalgia at the moment, so I haven't done so. You could install twin OS on your comp if you really want to use just one machine, especially easy to do if you have more than one drive in your PC. I have one set up just like that with XP and 98 so I can run a few programs I like that aint happy with XP, I just flip the boot drive priority in the BIOS if I need it to crank up on Win 98. |

I have a KVM switch with my 2 computers so switching screens is just a <tap! tap!> away.
