Default Dont be a snitch!

So I was on a patrol when I had just completed a photo recon and was heading home. I ran into a small convoy and just sank one large freighter then I get a order to patrol the east china sea so I turn around to head that a way.

After the convoy has sailed some and given me some distance, I surface and decide to send in a contact report on the convoy. As I head to my patrol area, I get a message to attack the convoy. FARTS! Now I have to turn around and find that stupid convoy. :rotfl:

This kind of thing happened in real life quite a bit. In theory you should report the convoy before attacking, but I know that this is not always possible, or even always a good idea.

One reason for reporting a convoy before attacking it, is that there may be intelligence about the convoy's cargo; for example, it might be transporting prisoners of war, in which case you'd not want to hammer it. Or it may be rendezvousing with a larger more important target, and following it might reveal the larger target etc.

However, an example of keeping your mouth shut being a good idea, occurs in U-Boat commander Herbert A Werner's autobiography 'Iron Coffins', when U-557 hits a couple of ships in a large convoy, then reports it and is told to shadow the convoy and transmit beacon signals for other subs to home in on (as per the 'wolfpack' doctrine). Then U-557 gets ordered away to look for survivors from the sinking Bismark (as do all other subs in the area) and so the convoy which he could have decimated gets away.

The other reason to keep your mouth shut of course is that transmitting messages increases the probability of enemy aircraft showing up. Which is why I never do that when near the coast of Japan. Reporting that there is a Japanese convoy near the coast of Japan is like reporting that there will be a Tuesday next week.

In this game, reporting the convoy always gets a response from SUBCOM. This is were your campaign takes a side track. As your motoring off taking scenic pictures of some harbor, report a convoy and wait. SUBCOM can wait on the pictures because they are going to tell you to start sinking ships . All of a sudden, those pictures are just not worth it at the moment. Besides you will get the chance to go take the pics afterwards. You are going to want to complete this also so you do not have a repeat picture taking session on your next patrol. In a sense, you can direct how you patrol will go. Make no contact report and keep heading to your first or second mission on the patrol or report and have some fun with a convoy....kudos included from the boys at PH.

Yep, I've bumped into one or two convoys and radioed in the contact before I made a move, I was low on fish and fuel, so I was gonna by pass it ... moments later I get a go ahead from base to attack the convoy.

I took a couple escorts out and surfaced to bang away at a freighter or two before the last escort could get to a good range, while shooting at the freighters, I radioed that I was out of torps and they told me to break and come home as I could.

Whew! We crashed and played hide and seek with the DD for an hour before I could get away.

Yeah, man...it is a scenerio like this that make the game very enjoyable...especially if you survive . It is a small thing like this over the regular scheduled mission that make the game just that more enjoyable.

Im still getting one problem with this type of mission

my mission ( primary) is to patroll ( insert grid here) so i patrol there for a week, a month 14984 years. no update. ever. always "incomplete"

on my way home i spot 2 convoys, and radio them in, im told one is a vital invasion fleet and i should engage a capital ship, ok closest to capital ship in that formation is a HVY Cruiser. i sink it, mission incomplete. maybe they meant a destroyer, or tug boat, i dont know..

next convoy same thing, engage, so i do and sink 2 ships, damage 2 more.
failed, but even on arcade options, when i was sinking half the convoy, always incomplete..

i dont really know what difference it makes, i dont need renown but i find it a shame that allmost all my missions are left incomplete. this must effect wether or not i get retired surely.

i do complete my missions, just dont get credit for doing so.

Hi all, new guy here so have a few questions:

If you report a convoy/ship and get orders to destroy it, will you get more renowned as if you had completed a mission objective?

Also, when exacly do you report the contact? Do you wait until you are in visual range? Or How far away do you have to be to report it in?\

thanks!

You get more renown for each ship you sink and more renown if you complete the objective of attacking this convoy that you are ordered to do. When the smoke clears, go finish up the original mission for more renown. Report the contact when you watch has stated ship spotted three times....I believe this is the magic number. Hang out after that and you will be told to do something about the convoy or if not ammo/torps, told to come on home.

I do not know if this affects your career or not. I really have not gotten that far in my career. I'm out for weeks on end so do not get in the higher number of patrols as yet. I can just recommend letting it play out and see what happens.

I've had this happen several times as well.. or at least "inflict heavy losses to convoy" and not been able to sink enough ships (even if I wipe out all except one destroyer in one case.. ran out of fish lol)

However.. After my latest round of "inflict heavy losses" not doing any good, I later encountered a DD and a gunboat patrolling in a completly different area. Sunk the DD and *bam* mission complete. :rotfl:

This is kind of weak but...

You can disregard the orders and find another convoy on the way out.

If you do some damage to the "Any convoy" espicially the warships evidently the orders will be fullfilled.
