Default Tonage policy

I was asking myself about what a u-boat captain would consider a waste of torpedo? 1K tons? 2K tons?

I m asking because I have the feeling that I m seeing too many ship in GWX (for the playability and a game purpose I m sure of it). But I don t have so many fishes so I m restraining myself to use torpedo against target of less than 2000 tons. Even like that I m used to go home long time before reaching my patrol area because of shortage.

Did they have a policy in reality or were they shooting at everything they were allowed too?

Except for special restrictions (Liners etc) I'm pretty sure they shot at whatever they could. The problem is there are just way to many ships. I thought GWX fixed this; I know the old '20/20 Mod' did.

In reality, uboat captains were advised to fire salvos of 2, 3, or 4 torpedoes at all targets.

Generally, they had no other way to sink targets.

Just think that if you have 22 torps and sink 22 1.5 ton ships that's a 33,000 ton patrol.

Not too shabby.

I don't usually send fish by tonnes, I just follow this guide

Do you have a deck gun?
YES: Move on to next question
NO: FIRE TORPEDOES

Is it escorted?
YES: FIRE TORPEDOES
NO: Move on to next question

Is it a large or medium cargo ship?
YES: FIRE TORPEDOES
NO: Move on to next question

Is it a large Tanker?
YES: FIRE TORPEDOES
NO: Move on to next question

Is it a small tanker or merchant or a medium tanker or a small warship (elco/Armed trawler)?
YES: Move on to next question
NO: FIRE TORPEDOES

Do you have enough deck gun ammunition to sink the bastard?
YES: FIRE DECK GUN
NO: FIRE TORPEDOES

If you follow that, normally it works pretty well. You can also use your flak gun to sink Elcos should you not want to waste a HE round from your deck gun

Hope that helps

Beg to differ TarJak, I've sunk Elcos and Armed Trawlers with my deckgun/flakgun and taken no damage at all :p

Ok, change that to "Does the target have a gun you actually respect?"
