Default Modesty Buses?

I wanted to get your opinions on the new 'Modesty Bus' scheme in Israel:

It is absurd and crazy and absolutely over the top of any Torah legal requirements.

The only excuse to even consider this is harrassment on busses from goons, which my daughters can attest as being, if not common, too occassional.

Otherwise the whole concept is an absolute disgrace and embarrassment to Judaism.

Let's keep things in proportion. They have been through less than a handful of such minor incidents over their lifetime of bus travels but that's more than there should be. Plus they went on bus routes that were from from containing a vast amount of riff-raff. Plus they were not the most frequent bus travelers around.

Meaning that events do occur and someone in the extremly religious community may have taken this as an excuse to be "more holier than thou". An excuse, by any other name, is still an excuse.

EDIT: Suggested reading: Egged and the Taliban ("Egged" is Israel's major national bus carrier).

Recent update from the same author: I Am Not Sitting at the Back of the Bus. I may not agree with 100% of what Naomi Ragen says in this article but I agree with her in spirit.

Ridiculous, utopic and disappointing.

It's a bus. Very bad vehicle when it comes to passenger segregation. At best you could build a wall in the middle of it but even then you'd still be riding on the same bus. The only way to do it properly is to split it in two: a mini-bus for men and a mini-bus for women. If that little segregation is sufficient and deemed satisfactory then perhaps the inventors should ponder if they aren't being blasphemous for making so little effort to realise their futile (though regarded as noble) intention.

If you're going to create the perfect world at least make an effort. Don't ashame your successors for being inept. Or realize that you're only pretending to have accomplished anything or that your standards are carelessly low.

Interesting paradox: in the more crowded train stations of some third world countries out there special wagons are separated exclusively for women so that they don't have to ride a massively packed metal box full of packed men poking their peckers all around them.

Yep.

Interesting note - Japan has some women-only train cars, mostly due to the rampant sexual harassment there (though I really hope Israel isn't as bad in that regard as Japan).

It isn't and if it was, doing something like this might be reasonable.

Note to TteFAboB: to the best of my knowledge, Japan is not considered a 3rd world country.

I should've known better! Japan fits the bill just right: packed metal box... Nevermind. Replace "third world countries" for "overcrowded train stations".

Sounds like Isreal needs some Rosa Parks spunk mixed with a little "Harper Valley PTA" attitude.

There have been several such cases already. Note the Naomi Ragen article links I posted.

We never travel on these lines but my husband promised me that if we ever did, he would sit down right next to me (or me next to him - wherever we prefer to sit) and bloody the hell out of anyone who tries to stop him.

Chivalry is not dead. It just takes the car instead of the bus.

What a childish comparison.

You're comparing segragation of sexes for reasons of excesive modesty to hate of people because of the color of their skin? The men don't hate the women. This is even done with the full consent of many of these woman in this ultra-religious community.

And what difference would there be if these "modesty" buses are specifically in Germany? Why did you bring Germany up in particular? What special relevance would this have if it happened in Germany versus anywhere else in the world?

And what of the segragated trains in Japan?
