SHG4 Sub sonar question.

Why is it that in SH4 we have to go under water with Sub in order to use hydrophone ( sonar )? Sh4 Subs have two hydrophone projectors mouted under hull and under forward torpedo room. Also there is a rotating bar on the forward deck which I under stand needs to be under water but the two projectors under the hull? Was this overlooked by the SH4 Devs? :hmm:

Heres what I'm talking about:

The Two Hydrophones (Projectors) are mounted at the bottom of shafts, which extend through the hull under the forward torpedo room. Lowering these shafts puts the two projectors below the keel.

As stated above the rotating sonar bar above the deck is under standable.

Sonic gear picks up sound you could hear with your own ears if you stuck your head out into the water.
The hydrophone in sonic gear resembles a long bar and is mounted topside, either port or starboard, forward of the conning tower.

Some of above was copied from:

Edit: Messed up tittle, should be SH4 not SHG4. LOL

I think that on the surface, even the bottom mounted hydrophones would be picking up the surface wave action.

I don't think it is a case of the hydrophones not working onthe surface but more a case that the hydrophones are not very effective on the surface

I suppose the idea is that at the surface, all you'd hear is alot of water surface noise-an idea that does have merit, however..The entire sonar system in the SH series is just really too oversimplified. I don't think it actually incorporates any real world physics at all..it 'turns on' at a certain depth, etc..

On top of that, I've decided that it's the exact same sonar that existed in SH3-there's no real modeling of a US JK/QC system.

Dont worry, I'm sure someone will soon release another realism mod that allows you to hear on the surface.:rotfl:

seriously, the water disturbance and other factors at the surface would make it very hard to use sonar effectively on the surface.
