Default Anybody see or run into any mines yet?

I see the fold out map shows us were minefields are, has anyone crossed them? Are they set for submerged targets? Surface targets? Can you see any?

I haven't, but then again, I never found any in SH3 either.

APPARENTLY they are in the game, though.

I've run into mines alright! One blew a chuffing great hole in the side of my boat while I was in accelerated time. I had a look around on external view and found another floating about fifty yards away. I'm sure I took a pic of it, when I get home from work I'll post it if I did. I found plenty of mines in SH3 as well particuarly in the English Channel I think it was up around Dieppe area.

Here you go, one sea mine for you. You can see the damage that was caused by the one that knocked me out of accelerated time.

There are quite a few minefields in game, but for some reason they are very low-density. The densest minefields are set to have 3 mines per square kilometer - not a huge chance that you'll run into one even if you're sailing through one of the barriers there :hmm:

ok, maybe off topic, but seeing that mine reminded me of the "Gilligan's Island" episode where the mine washes up on the island....

I'm sad...I know...

So the mines are just for submerged targets, but for surfaced targets too?

Hmmm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Scorpion_%28SS-278%29

Quote:
No information has been received from the Japanese which would indicate the loss of the Scorpion was the result of enemy anti-submarine tactics. There were, however, several naval mine lines across the entrance to the Yellow Sea. The presence of these mine lines and the "restricted area" bounding them was discovered from captured Japanese Notices to Mariners at a much later date. In the meantime several submarines had made patrols in this area, crossing and recrossing the mine lines without incident, and coming safely home. It is probable that these mine lines were very thin, offering only about a 10 percent threat to submarines at maximum, and steadily decreasing in effectiveness with the passage of time. Scorpion was lost soon after these mines were laid, or at a time when they presumably offered the greatest threat. She could have been an operational casualty, but her area consists of water shallow enough so that it might be expected that some men would have survived. Since we know of no survivors, the most reasonable assumption is that she hit a mine.
(My bold)

Well something by accident or design that's historical in the game then?
