I bought SHIII a long time ago. I never played it beyond the few exercise missions because of StarForce, a lack of time, and a lack of stability.
When I saw SHIV, I thought, "Great! No german voices and maybe they fixed the bugs." However, after a bit of playing SHIV, I'm not so sure. I'm fully patched and the game crashed on my first campaign just as I entered the patrol area. I had downed one 5000 ton cargo along the way and had just dropped four torps into two unescorted cargo vessels. I was surfacing for a deck-gun kill when the game crashed hard. I'm also a little less than impressed with sending torps *way* under the keel when relying on the recognition manual. Furthermore, the tutorials from the manual seemed a bit broken. Things just don't seem right. So, should I play SHIV, go back and re-play SHIII, or play something like Dangerous Waters for a year or so till SHIV is better? |

Play a mixture of all three. Patch up SH4, get GWX for SH3 and try a modern sim like DW. That way, if SH4 crashes, turn to SH3 and get bum raped by the DDs, and when you're bored of that, stalk a Russian boomer in a Los Angeles class on DW.

Normally I only play one sim at a time. It'ss too difficult to get used to a sim. Usually takes 8~10 hours to pick up a good sim. After that, my brain locks in for a few months and then I get a new sim and uninstall the old.

I've never stopped playing SH3 (well, I have, but that's because my computer's in storage and I can't play anything for the time being). With the patches and mods it's almost my idea of the perfect sub sim. The things that still can't be fixed are the things modders can't touch because they're hard-coded.
SH4 is looking to be the same way, once it gets ironed out. I don't play modern sims, but I used to play Aces Of the Deep and Silent Hunter 1 side-by-side; that is I had concurrent careers in both games. Once everything is together I intend to do the same with SH3 and SH4.
