Default merchant spotted...what bearing?

Merchant Spotted! Yay! What bearing? Is there no longer a way to have the watch officer call out the nearest contact? I have encountered a merchant at night, and i can't see him because my watch officer is being coy with his sighting - he doesn't want to cheat me of the fun of finding the ship myself...

Sorry, you get one chance at bearing and that is it. Not like SH3 where you could click the WO all day and he would call it out. Kind of sucks. Sometimes I have to dive and use my sonar to pick it up. When I surface the WO will call it out again.

That's ridic. But wait - one chance? Try no chance - I got the merchant spotted pop up, with those familiar options (attack, dive, continue). I don't think there was any bearing info in that generic screen, and scrolling up now in the message window there's no record of any ship spotted. Did they forget to include visual bearing information in the game?

Install the keyboard mod, use control-v, problem solved.

Edit: here's the link too

Man, that mod has saved my butt so many times already. Now if we could just get them to add this already existing functionality to the UI!

Amazing - yea - without this mod the game is unplayable - i can't return to course either without some lucky magic of clicking the set course button on an existing waypoint. It's glitchy as hell. Getting keyboard mod now.

Hey keelbuster. Nice to see you in the pacific. Water's are nice and warm if you want, check out my mod pack, I got that the nearest visual contact command, and a and other such misisng commands mapped to the command bar; and a whole lot more. Jut thoguht id mention it, cause id hate to see you go insane with frustration and run back to the atlantic.

You'll find the "nearest visual contact" in the watch officer menu bar.

thread link in sig.

Thx - good to be here. The Pacific is beautiful; reminds me of FarCry. I've got it running on a work machine because my home system isn't strong enough. I'm keeping the atlantic experience at home. I'll check out your mod pack - glad you guys are working out the details. Can't wait for a realism mod - right now i'm finding it easier to take on convoys with the deck gun than torpedoes

Yeah i know. Ive tweaked the AI a wee bit. Still have more work to do on it, but its alot better then stock.

Oh ya, also for your own sanity. The torpedo speed selection to "FAST" is bugged. Something screwy with the TDC and torpedo's not traveling at the rate they should. (think of it as the exact opposite of the Gyro angle not udating in SH3 when moving from a T1 to a T3 torpedo) In otherwords, just shoot at the slow setting, and you'll be fine. The devs are aware of this problem and working on it.

Look in Ducimus's post... the fourth Icon a dotted line with a solid upside down V above it is return to course... no mods needed for that one

Buggy, disappointing end to my career. Patrol 1 - hit by aircraft. Flooding to stern. That compartment flooded completely because I couldn't tell if my repair crew was working or not - i 'deployed' them more than once, and wasn't sure they were on it (no activity indicator). Anyway, eventually, with time compressioon, and enough clicks on the deploy repair crew indicator, I had the boat back in shape. The stern was no longer dragging, and we were underway - headed for home. On the way home I encounter a convoy in my path. I decide to attack - drop to PD, and the boat starts sinking. The rear end pulls down like crazy and we start to plummet. I blow ballast and go ahead flank. The boat stops at around 250ft, and starts to rise. Ok - weird - why would she sink? Then i start to die - screen goes black in the command room. As it zooms out of my boat in the death cam, i hear all sorts of calls of broken equipment as the camera goes out to the sky; my XO spoils the reverence of the moment by calling out broken equipment reports dutifully, as the boat is crushed. I think - damn, well, let's pretend that the boat had a critical failure from early damage, and I bought it. Fine. Then I get this message saying I'm going to be court-martialled for attacking our own. Not sure what they're referring to here - I sunk two Jap freighters on my way out. Maybe I was court-martialled for sinking my own boat. Dishonor, even in death. Maybe my XO survived, launching himself out a torpedo tube, pissed, because I was too drowned to listen to his damage reports, and he surfaced, pulled an indiana jones and stowed away aboard a Jap ship, escaped somehow, contacted headquarters....i dunno. My imagination is stretched hard here. I'm really trying to bend this into an acceptable sim experience.

Try not to get pessimistic, i know its easy to do. Theres a number of mods that address alot of issues whilst we wait for the next patch. if not mine then someone else's. Use them and you'll be alot happier.
