Default Found a good diving sequence but need someone to record it

I was over at my grandfathers discussing things about world war 2. He served on a Destroyer Escort in the US Navy. DE 181 USS Straub well anyway we got talking and soon he let me see all the old VHS tapes that he has had of all sorts of submarine and documentary films.

One of the films I stumbled on was called "Submerged" and no its not the cheap one with steven segal, but rather about a real story of a world war 2 sub that was lost durring sea trials. The movie was actually very good and no im not an absolute hard core history buff but things looks very real and believable.

Anyways right before the sub begins it dive there is a great dive sequence that takes place. It runs through just about everything and i thought that it could be used in the simulator hooked to the original dive sound file.

Since it is on VHS i am not able to get it. I'm not sure that the movie ever was placed on DVD as it was made for TV film.

Here is the information on the film on a website

http://www.seacoastnh.com/arts/please060201.html

If your not able to get the sound then atleast try and find the movie or read the site, it is a very interesting storyline and very accurate acording to what i read.

Hope someone can do something with the sound file, or if not hope some people learn some history from reading the site. Even if these men were not at war they could find themselves in a cold steel tomb, and this movie does a good job of displaying that.

Enjoy

The game has problems playing any sound clips longer than 15 seconds. It will play once, then never again. Remember this if you do.

I made a neat dive sequence sound sort of like was in SH3, but had to chop it down.

So I am trying to play the different parts into two spoken/sound files to simulate it.

There are missing sounds/speech. Take you submarine to crush depth and you will never hear the sound of breaking glass, water steam, water pipe burst, etc.

At least not with my sound card and 1 Gig of Ram.

Well i know that this is SH4 and some of the things that were fixed in SH3 are back to haunt us in SH4, but i dont remember ever having this problem in SH3 of a sound file being to long and never getting repeated. If i remember correctly one of the sound mods for SH4 using the original ambient submarine sound file for SH3 and i have had no problems with it. I believe this file is approx 10 min long or longer. Is this because the sound is a looping sound or is this some type of bug. You really cant do a good diving sequence in the amount of time they are allowing for sound effects to play. There are way to many commands and components to the dive and surface commands.

I really hope that we can get around the limitation that you discovered with the sounds. Please keep me posted, im going to play around a little with the sounds and see if this happens with every sound or just certain commands.

Also the gramaphone tracks play more then once and they are also the same type of file.

Weird things but keep up the great work one day SH4 will be right up there in the top subsims of all time, just takes some time and commitment

I know the movie. It's very good. "Submerged" was made for TV and broadcast in 2001. Unfortunately that means that its contents - including the sound effects, dialogue etc remain in copyright until at least 2051. No-one will argue about private individuals using bits of the movie to enhance their personal gaming experience - although, strictly speaking, that is illegal - but a different view might be taken of someone who distributes sound from a copyright movie.

Well i dont want to start a war about copyrighted material, and i do not want anyone to do anything illegal but i had no idea that one could not take a simple sound effect of clip from a movie. I mean do the sound effect technician request permission to use someone elses idea when they make the movie. I mean there is no way that they are the first to create a submarine diving sound or anyother sound. So i did not realize that by asking for a clip or recording a clip I was breaking the law.

Well back the drawing board i guess, i just thought the diving sequence with all the commandes for valves, dive planes, hatches etc was the best i had heard in a while.

I hope we can get around the freaking bug that keeps sounds that are over 15 seconds from being played a second time, im sure someone will figure this out, we have one of the best modding communities.

Thanks again
William

I'm using 30sec+ samples for AC's, contrary to submarine onboard sounds, these seem to play flawless.

bunkerratt put it rather indelicately, but it's true; no-one seems to worry overmuch about sounds copied for free mods to enhance games...at least not yet.

Have you tried a submarine sound? If it is longer than 15 seconds, it will only play once, then never again.

I do not know if it is a limitation of my sound card or not. Sound Blaster 512 pci (older than me lol).

I also do not get ANY damage sounds from pipe burst, water steam, etc; when diving too deep. Can you confirm this?? thx
