Default Midway Island

Midway Island. Couldn't believe how many classes of ships were there, and the port itself. In reality, Midway was not even close to what is portrayed in SH4. Shame they didn't bother to do any research Also New Guinea is misspelled on the map. Just some observations.

Whats the date?

I arrived at Midway from a Far Eastern patrol jsut after the battle of Midway had ended it seemed. Teh place was full of life boats and downed airmain so I delayed returning to patrol and spent a ew hours rescuing people. Not sure if I get a medal or not as I'm still on the same patrol I just keep refitting. There was about 5 warships and 4 merchants, as well as about 15 life boats and that many survivors floating about.

Midway was actually an important post in the Pacific War. The base at its height had several tenant commands:
Naval Air Station
Submarine Base
Marine Aviation
Marine Defense Battalion
Public Works as Resident Officer-in-Charge
P.T. Boats
Army
Construction Battalion
Ship Intemediate Repair Facility

Now I agree that the base may be a little crowded for normal operations, but I am sure that it saw its share of ships during the war.

Riding past Midway is a pain with the SD as is right now. Radar reports every few seconds.

I'm just keeping the numpad + button pressed the entire time.

It was not a fleet Anchorage. Used for refueling subs, and other small ships. Never would a task force dock there. It was a small island, and to show it with facilities that rival Mare Island is not right. And lighthouses to boot. No way. Just a little reading should have been done. Also, plenty of pictures of Midway are available.
Still its an enjoyable sim, and just that.

I've been to Midway, but only once and I don't remember much. On the other hand, Wiki has a pretty good set of maps and pics. You might fit a lot of ships in there, but I think you're right, and they didn't.

As for actual dock space...doesn't look like too much.

I am sure they did plenty of reading, as they seem to have done enough research on the Pacific War. If you grabbed the bases' official history like I did and saw that list of tennant commands, then they may have assumed it was a much larger base. Whether or not they should have spent the time to model Midway exactly the state at which it was in a particular phase of WWII would be a waste of time in my opinion. The base existed and served as a vital part of our war effort. That is enough. The harbor facilities were in fact small, and the only ships permanently based there were a sub tender, a destroyer tender, some PT boats, as well as service craft. I am sure they were attempting to make it look like a naval base, which they did. If this was supposed to be an exact mirroring of WWII, then we would not have a dynamic campaign or most of the ships that appear as targets since there would only really be one or two of them for the whole war. Like you said, it is a fun sim, and that should be enough.
As far as spelling goes, who knows how it is spelled in their native language. US atlases have misspelled the names of countries for years. I have gotten an earful from more than one person about it while visiting their countries. It is sometimes hard to translate from one language into another and get it exactly right. I am not making excuses for them, but it may be making an assumption to say they didn't do any reading on the subject.

I think the harbor is reasonably well portrayed although a little overdone in the forces for the time. All-in-all what's there adds to the game more than takes away.
