Default WOW that was stupid!

So im just out driving my U-boat around on the surface and the watch crew spots a destroyer dead ahead about 5,000 meters at around sunset.

I follow him for a little while just to see what he will do (still surfaced) and he doesnt seem to be noticing me.

the sun is setting deep now and it is almost dark. i have closed to within 3800 meters of this guy and he is still just running ahead slow without any idea that im there.

i chuckle - "im going to have a bit of fun with this destroyer"

I man the deck gun, carfully range the target through the UZO three times to make sure

I open fire on him and the first shot is a direct hit massive explosion. i quickly order a crash dive.... the alarm bell rings, men are frantic trying to get to their diving stations, i go to the periscope view and raise the scope to watch what the destroyer does.

Suddenly everything around me lights up brightly and i can clearly see at least 6 shells flying rapidly in my direction.

It is at this point that i notice

IM STILL ON THE SURFACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the friggin sabotage/ malfunction feature of SH3 commander rendered my flank speed inoperative and im sitting at zero knots on the surface facing down a destroyer.

"AHEAD FULL" the diesels spool up and suddenly ALL SIX SHELLS that guy fired found their mark right dead center on my U-boat. Heavy flooding in the bow torpedo compartments, bow crew compartment, sonar/radio room, the sonar and radio operators are now dead, the command room is damaged and my diesels are knocked out!!

back to the periscope, 6 more shells coming at me - all hits! NOOOOOOO all hands lost!

glad i was playing around with a meaningless career that i dont really keep up with

Sounds like quite the experience, good idea to do a few tests before getting to far into a patrol. Speed test, which you found out the hard way, another is a crash dive to make sure the boat does not go into a crash dive without leveling off.

*shaking head* That serves you right - "having a bit of fun" by attacking a Destroyer with the deck gun!

Doenitz and the families of the 40something dead will not be pleased!

Cheers,
AndyW

Yeah, call me a girl's blouse but I'd have let the DD go on his merry way unmolested by my pea-shooter. Now if he'd been escorting something juicy things might be different...

As for surface issues, I learnt about the GWX bouyancy feature the hard way. I thought I was sneaking around Loch Ewe at periscope depth. In reality I was sticking my conning tower several meters out of the water for all to see as I was only at 2 kts and a set depth of 12m. I now pay very close attention to set depth and actual depth.

I'm actually a bit peeved about this "feature". I understand that at slow speed there was positive buoyancy and one had to compensate, but it's not like the capitan had to order "depth 19m" to get a depth of 15m, the helmsman should have taken care of this...

It is a bit trying at times but I thought I'd just go with it. I think there's a 'fix' or rather a 'bouyancy-turner-offer' somewhere isn't there?
