I know in WW2, the sub captains estimated AOB. Are you speaking of a tool like the Stadimeter station in Dangerous Waters?
sorry, I wish I could help more. |

Dunno..
I usually noted numerous locations over a few minutes to get their heading, lined up a shot ahead of the target and measured the AoB from where it would be sitting when I fire.

Start doing AOB with cars and stuff. That's what Richard O'Kane did.

And yes, US skippers 'called' the AoB, meaning estimated by visual observation. That's what I always did in SH3, so am ready to do so in SH4. An easy way to do it is to think of yourself on the bridge of the target, looking at the sub. What angle off the bow is the sub? That is the AoB.

Yeah, practice, practice, practice. You'll get good at it real quick. One thing I have noticed is that often times games have a problem accuratly displaying 3D models for really good AoB estimates until the object is up close and in high detail.
I dont know if its a dynamic shading issue or what, but I get issues with the object looking as if it could be both coming and going until its close and drawn in high detail....maybe its just me |

Yeah, I have the same problem nattydread, exactly the same. I was hoping that the higher detailed ships in SHIV with bump mapping might help, but I canceled my Amazon.com pre-order.
I'm a little upset with what seems to be a deceptive claim of 'higher resolutions'(above 1024x768). Perhaps if and when I calm down about that I might change my mind, but for right now I feel I can't trust them(Ubi/Devs) at all.

I think that 'coming or going' phenomenon is just natural for a silhouetted object.

The book that O'Kane used to practice AoB is "Wahoo."
I think he's in one of the Australian bases. |

On top of trying to guess the angle based on observation, the camo paint was purposely designed to try and fool a person into guessing the wrong angle or wrong size of the ship. If you guess wrong once in a while, then that validates the accuracy of the sim.
