Default Getting Target Speed

Hello has anyone been able to get the TDC speed gauge to work? I am referring to right hand pop out gauge of the TDC which has buttons for Range, AOB, and Speed.

According to the manual, all you should have to do is click on the speed button once, then once more to get a speed estimate (this is how it worked in SH3). Yet when I click on the speed button, a small stopwatch pops up. I can start and stop the stopwatch but I cannot figure out how to get speed from this.

Also, the manual mentions something about the Sonar officer being able to estimate speed, but I couldn't figure a way to do this.

if possible (no game here so far, so i don´t know)
try to lock the target before starting the stopwatch...
maybe "L" Key?! :p

Im getting these issues too - stop watch appears, runs (sometimes) but second left click just gets rid of it, speed TDC is never updated.

Also cant see how to get sonar to estimate speed, only bearing and range (and i have issues with this too).

Estimating speed with sonar happens by listening to how many times the shaft of the propeller turns per minute, and then dividing that by a known turns per knot value. I know that this method cannot be used in SH3, so I don't think you will be able to use it in SH$ either.

Hahahahah . Newbies hey , identify the target first (you have to identify the ship class correctly) in your recognition manual and tick the box . Then you can put the speed etc in .

I dont have the game, so Im not sure this works in SHIV, if you can, plot the location on the map as you start the time(using range and bearing info). After a minute or so, plot the target again. Now you have time and distance between plot...so you can determine speed with simple math.

I got to get back into the game again to re-learn other math tricks, but a good inverse tangent table and stuff and I think you can set up perfect 0 gyro shots and determine range to track and all kinds of nice stuff.

Yeah, it works in SH3, sort of... not really as good s I think it should. Sometimes I get decent speeds, sometime 60 knots... I'm told you have to stop your sub for the best accuracy.

I always take the listed speed and divide by half. And then I examine the bow wave... ok, I'm joking about the bow wave.

At the moment using the nav map and marking/timing is the only way i can get speed.

I identify ship, enter type into TDC (confirmed with the readout on the left), go to estimate speed and despite stopwatch appearing the second left click still does nothing.

In the realistic options screen have you enabled officer assist .

If all else fails, use the 3-minute rule.

Oh wait, if there's no Imperial system in SH4, then it's back to the 3:15 rule for the metric system.

Also, if you have a good idea what the range to target is.. you can Lock it and measure it's movement over a shorter period of time. Calculate how far your fish travel per second beforehand, and measure how many degrees it moves in the period of time it would take for your fish to get there. Fire at the bearing you estimated with no extra settings.

What the hell.. it's better than nuthin! Shoot by bearing change rate if nothing else!

There is no option for officer assist even though the manual says there is. Only option is manual/auto TDC option.
