Default 1280x1024 vs. 1024x768

I've had my new 17" LCD monitor for a bit over a month now. It's native resolution is 1280x1024. However, when playing games I can't tell a difference between 1280x1024 or 1024x768. They look the same to me. The only way I would notice a game set with a resolution of 1280x1024 is the performance. I get better performance out of my video card when running games in 1024x768 (obviously ). Is there really a point to running games in 1280x1024 other than the monitor not having to switch resolutions between the desktop and game?
