Default History Channel

It is a few years old, but really worth a watch....

http://store.aetv.com/html/product/index.jhtml?id=72498

Picked up a copy cheap on ebay, and is a good background for SHIV if you don't have the time and inclination to read Silent Victory, Lockwood's books, and Theodore Roscoe.....

I agree...an excellent documentary!

Thanks for the link, dean_acheson! I didn't realize that it was available on DVD now.

I just ordered it. I noticed they had a couple other parts, with one of them focusing on the german side. I'll probably order that one as well at some point. Looks like this one is for the American side.

I don't believe I've seen this either. Definitely looks interesting. I'd order it too, but with all the books piling up on my desk, would take a while until I'd get a chance to sit down and enjoy it.

200 minutes of clips on fleet boats, torpedos, and patrol aircraft.

Hmm, well, since you put it that way -- I'm sure I could find the time.

I have seen this and you, Mush Martin, should be delighted to know there is actual footage of Mush Morton walking along the deck of Wahoo pounding his fists into his hands. That part alone is worth the money....!!!!

It is 200 minutes long in two dvds and consists of four volumes.
1. the boats
2. the captains
3. the torpedos
4. the attack plans

has a bunch of interviews with WWII vets, historians, and reinactments from inside the Bowfin and Cavalla. A bunch of good color footage. Really some quality stuff. Think they filmed it about 2000 when the history channel has less fluff and was geared at a more serious level. (those of you who have watched the history channel for years know what I mean.)

one of the best documentaries I have seen on the fleet boats....

and yes, there are some good clips of ol' Mush! If anyone is interested, I could write a better summary.

I'd definitely be interested in reading an enhanced summary.

Even though it's not sub related I would have to recommend Dogfights by the history channel also. The sinking of the Bismark is a great episode. Death of the Japanese navy really shows the bravery of the DD and DE captains of Taffy 3 and the pilots of the planes from the carrier escorts.

Dogfights is pretty good - they always manage to feature some old salts - and some authors from the featured period. Some of the 3D models are quite good - some not so good - and the SFX are a joke.

I have the History Channel DVD and just happened to watch it this weekend. Very nice, and a necessity if you're a fan of American subs in the Pacific in WWII. Thankfully, there's very little overlap with the Periscope Films Silent Service DVD (Which is supposedly included with SH4), which I also watched this weekend.

Same here, I'd love to read an enhanced summary! It would be mighty nice if you would do that, dean!

Goody!
I'll watch them again, and take a few notes, and put something up. Two nights ago, and last night I watched them, but was doing laundry and other things. I'll sit down and pay attention this time....
