Default 2 unrelated questions: groundswells and sextants

In SH3 you can get flat seas or a chaotic mixture of waves going every which way,
with the wave heights directly proportional to the wind speed. I was wondering if you
could be in calm winds yet still experience a sizable groundswell from a distant storm.
Given the size of the Pacific this should be more common than it would be in the
Atlantic I would guess.

I also wish there was a sextant in the game-get a star or sun sighting to get latitude,
but I guess it would require a table or something to consult.

Something tell me that with all on their plate the developers probably haven't delved too deeply into the subjects of oceanography and astronomy. Would be nice to have a sub that actually drifts when motionless.

But then it wouldn't be motionless.:rotfl:

But I agree, it would be nice to have drifting. On the other hand, after looking through The American Practical Navigator, I'm not sure I would want manual navigation to be too realistic.

But you obviously liked it in spite of yourself. I can only quote Obi-Wan Kenobi: "Who's more foolish-the fool, or the fool who follows him?"

It can be *real* tough getting a star/moon/sun shot... in swells, much less three. I've seen a 'shooter' on each bridge wing, and a third on the signal flag deck... *the fix* was the combination that produced the smallest triangle on the chart. I can't imagine that with one shooter at the conn of a Boat. Better to not try modelling that...*I* think.
