thanks

It's not possible to use two monitors. There's no possibility to open a map in a new window.

But if you have two monitors (and a graphics card that manages them) you can open the map in PDF file that comes with your games. Not exactly what you want, but that's better than nothing. You could also run a second SH3 game, but I doubt any computer will do well with two of them at a time.

Yes you can, I do it all the time. I have two 17" LCD's and I open the map on one and then start the game on the other. You will need a video card that has two monitor outputs and I use this software.

The one I use is in your game folder: SilentHunterIII\documentation. The file name is SH3_MAP.jpg

Is it also possible to run small/medium applications on the second display? I ask because I might be developing an SHIII application that could be used best on a two monitor setup. And I have a second monitor, like probably many other people. But I have no experience with that yet.

No DirectX based games, of course.

In my setup I essentially have one large desktop spread out over two monitors. It is still one working environment but Ultramon adds a lot of functionality. I can have two applications open, one on each monitor but you still switch between the two.
