Default Depth Charges and Speaker Relation

Sometimes when I'm being DC'd I hear the blasts going off in my left speaker, sometimes my right, and sometimes both together. Is this modeled as to where around my boat the charges are? Is the left speaker the bow, the right the stern, or what? And if not why would I be hearing charges from one speaker and not the other? It sounds like they're going off around me so I'd like to know if I can use this as one way to avoid them.

Also...is my sonar man actually deaf? I listened on the headphones to a DD drop charges *splash, splash, splash* and his screws churning the water. My incompetent fool then tells me he has "no contact". So my question is, Can I take him up to the conning tower and cap him in the back of the head with my Luger?

Dont waste good luger ammo on him (Or a good luger). Just let Bernard hot bunk with him...
Serious, mate, i think your sonarman is just unexperienced.Have you assigned radioman qualities to him (that "lightning" bolt in the crew managment screen) , or is he just a bilge rat? About the "stereo" sound; im not sure if stereo sound effects actually are implemented in the game, mate, to be honest, i havent given it much thought when beeing DC'ed..

The speakers do give the impression of direction and not just with DCs. When cruising try turn around while you are in the sub. You will hear the engine noise adjusting according to your position. Its an intended feature but I dont think you can use it to avoid DCs. By the time you hear them they have already exploded so if you are alive, then they missed... that simple

As for the sonar guy. Lets setup a time and place and we'll do both our guys...

1. To get the best idea of direction by sound, I face the bow. That way I can tell port/syatboard more easily as things happen.

2. If you can, get 5.1 or 7.1 speakers (if your sound card is capable). I use some so-so Creative Labs 5.1 that cost me around $40 US. Refurbs Baby. The only way to shop . They sound quite good for games and I can always tell where destroyers are coming from (and usually where they're going) as well as have a Very good idea where the wabos are going off. If they kick my feet off the subwoofer...well...I usually just start a new career .

Good Hunting!!!

If you have 5.1 channel sound or better, you get a really good idea of the direction from which sounds are coming. Great fun when you are a surface target listening to shells whistle around you from front to back or side to side.

You also get a good indication of whether where DC's are falling and if you pan the view so it is tilted at an angle, you can tell whether they are exploding above or below you!

The sub woofer makes a huge difference too! Your ears will love you for getting surround sound and at the prices that are around now I reckon you can't afford not to.

I use Creative 5.1 Surround Sound speakers with a Sub woofer and the sound of depth charges going off varies from speaker to speaker depending on where the charges are dropped around my Sub , I sometimes use Trust 5.1 Silverline Headset 751B Headphones and get the same sound feeling.

Did the DD pass overhead and astern of you? I think if he's astern of you then he's in your baffles and the sonarman won't be able to hear him.

No, the DD was at bearing 270...but I may have had a bilge rat in the seat at the time, come to think of it.

Definitely gonna look into the 5.1 thing...thanks, fellas!

I have 5.1 and yes, the noise will come on the speaker for the side it is generated for. What is cool is the creaking noises while submerged that start from one side of the boat to the other side....the speakers will play just like that. It really sounds like the side is stressing on pressure and it is moving down the boat. I have the 4 speaker set up with a woofer. In the sound card set up(I use the motherboard sound) I have the speakers set to surround sound. Woofer baby! DC never sound so loud and my chair vibrates My wife thinks I'm an idiot. Oh well, we all have our drug of choice...mine is a few hits of SH3. Call you in the morning

I forgot to mention and surprised some don't hear it but. In the command rooms screen as your looking at the FO, the sonar man is calling out contacts, it comes from the left speakers as your left ear is closest to sonarman(ingame first person). He also sounds like he is in the other room also. Also, on the conning tower the wind does have sound direction.

You won't regret it and your ears with thank you forever.

You can pick up PCI sound cards for less than AU$50 now and speaker rigs are getting pretty cheap as well. I've seen 7.1 Home Theatre speaker systems for less than AU$100.

I'd be prepared to pay a little more for the speakers to provide better quality though. dunno how tinny the $99 ones would sound, but if you are on a tight budget getting much grerater immersion for under AU$150 is still great value.
