Landlocked means no access to the sea, and its quite a long way down the Mississippi to the Gulf. Yes Tennessee is landlocked.

About 20 years ago now, in a small town on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley called Magna, two slightly drunk friends got into an argument. Rather than trade blows, one of them went outside of the bar and unhitched his friend's horse (yes, some parts around here still have hitching posts at the bars...and the McDonalds's), and tried to sell it to a woman walking down the street. The drunk owner of the horse called the police and insisted on pressing charges. He dropped the charges when he sobered up, but a local assistant District Attorney stayed up all night looking through law books, until he finally charged the offender with "Attempting to sell an item that didn't belong to him". You see, "Horse Theft" was still a hanging offence in Utah at that time, and the poor ADA didn't want to take the chance that someone might push for the ultimate punishment.

I was looking at some of the laws for Canada - the law against yellow margarine applies only in Quebec (it is intended to protect the provincial butter industry, as margarine must be coloured an unappealing white or orange colour). In any other province, margarine can legally be coloured yellow.
It used to be illegal to sell margarine in Canada at all, but the Supreme Court struck down the law in 1949 (and this was upheld by the British Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, which was still the final court of appeal in Canada for civil cases until 1949). The reference was Reference re Validity of Section 5(a) of the Dairy Industry Act (Margarine Reference) [1949] SCR 1; [1949] 1 DLR 433. Also, the law concerning Quebec signs has been changed due to a Supreme Court ruling - the language of the signs must now be predominantly in French, but the provincial government cannot ban English on the signs. The case was Ford v. Quebec (AG), [1988] 2 SCR 712; 54 DLR (4th) 577. |

A couple of years ago a guy fell out of a canoe (I forget exactly where) and came up cold and cursing. A nearby mother called the cops and had him arrested. Seems they had a law against swearing in front of children.

Hello All,
My favorite one was an old law that a citizen pulled up and requested it be enforced after he served his time in jail. It was written that when you finished serving jail time that you would be awared 1 revolver, 1 suit, 1 horse and 12 Double Eagle dollars to start fresh with. The town decided to honor it with 1 old and unusable revolver, 1 poor looking suit, 1 horse that would do fine at a glue factory and $12.00. As for most of the stuff, this guy did not care about as they were following the law as it was written. What he fought for was the 12 Double Eagle dollars as they are made of gold and he was fully aware of their value at the time. He won and was awarded the correct coins after the city was able to acquire the Gold coins specified in the law.:rotfl:

Well apparently in Hereford a town on the Welsh-English border you can killa welshman as long as it is with a sword and you are on horseback.
Or you use a bow and arrow. I'll have to double check it but it sounds right. |
