Default Problems with USBs

I have a problem with the USBs on my other computer.I have un-installed them re-installed them updated the drivers etc but they still seem not to work.I now suspect it is a physical problem with them.Does anybody know of a way to check them. They only seem not to work when I connect the modem to them and then try and connect to the internet. The modem had an led which flashes red.The modem is fine with this computer.

I'm sorry but I don't quite understand what the problem is...
1) Do you mean the USB ports on your computer don't work?
2) Your USB modem doesn't work?

If number 1, then does any other USB devices work, such as a USB printer, memory stick, USB mouse, etc? Does the port controllers show up normally in Windows Device Manager? Are they USB 1.1 ports or 2.0? If your using ports on the front of your computer, are they hooked up inside to the motherboard headers?

If number 2, then did anything happen at all when you plugged your modem in? Did you install the modem drivers properly? Does the Device Manager show an Unknown Device (or another error) when you plug the modem in? Does any lights come on on the modem when you plug it in?

Or 3...I totally misunderstood the problem you are having and am chasing geese up trees.

I am starting to think it mybe network issues as my brother-in-law has the same problem, and we both use the same isp.The modem has two led's One is for the usb the other is for the adsl.Sometimes the usb led flashes red and I cannot connect to the internet. It was also flashing the other day when I tried to download a 300mb file.I have used the windows connection troubleshooter and it says the cables between the modem and the computer are faulty some of the time.I was suspecting a hardware problem with the usb was the cause but now I am not so sure.

I had the same problem with mine. I reinstalled teh drivers and the modem fixed itself.

I use tesco.net as my ISP with a Thompson modem.

I am on Tiscali and it has taken me several attempts to get onto the internet with my more modern computer.
